Hi All

I'm not talking about manufacturers warranties, rather the garage variety that they administer themselves.

Has anyone any personal experience of these (good or bad)?

Buying a £15K car soon and seller asked me about their warranty which is £500.

Thanks in advance.

General rule of thumb is garages offer you extra hoping to make a fair mark up on it. Contact a few local authorised dealers for this car and see what extended warranties they can offer.

Depends.

How long is it for?

What does it exclude?

£500 is only £10pw.

Do you feel lucky?

They say 12 months, but I get a 3 month warranty anyway so 9 months I guess

It seems to exclude the usual 'wear n tear' stuff and limits work to £50 phr garage charge.

I never rely on luck.

£50 per hour is nothing for many garages, doesn't sound like its worth the paper its written on IMO

I had an after market warranty, and had loads of trouble when my condenser went at £450...

Basically the main problem is the warranty company won’t pay what garages want, in the end my car ended up at some back street garage in the middle of nowhere, as 10 garages I went through would not accept the warranty providers rates....

Then the warranty company was saying if they can get the part for £180 then they won’t pay more!!

Honestly it was a real headache and took 2 months to resolve...

TLDR warranty companies will send it to the cheapest person, regardless of your opinion

I bought a s/h car earlier on this year and it came with a 3 month warranty from a company called WMS Group, written on one of the documents was they cover up to £3 grand worth of repairs with a load of get out clauses, if you think about it anything can be put down to wear and tear on a used car. I had an airbag light come on after a month and they wasn't interested which didn't surprise me.
The car has been excellent and it came from a respectable dealer which is a must when buying a used car because the warranty wasn't worth the paper it's was written on. After 3 months they wrote me a letter if I wanted to take out a new warranty, thanks but no thanks.

That seems quite expensive. I got an extended 2 years on my used GTI (3 years in total) for £560 when purchased from Listers who are a main dealer. Not sure on how that compares with others.

My cat converter light appeared a month ago which was one the few things not covered for >5 year old cars. They wanted to inspect still, found it was an issue with the intake manifold and replaced - that covered the cost of entire warranty!

I’d say it’s worth it for peace and mind, but £500 for essentially 9 months is very steep in your case.

It’s all insurance at the end of the day. 50 quid an hour would make a big dent in the bill of an indy. 100% coverage would be nice but it’s ultimately all pay your money take your chance. Or buy a car with manufacturer warranty.

I've never bought one (I'm reasonably handy on the spanners) - I save the money and top it up with £25-£50 per month towards repairs.

I'm well in 'profit' over the years.

The only dealer extras I've paid for are service packages. Never bothered with warranties as friends' experiences have led me to believe theyre not worth the paper they're written on

I bought the BMW one off BMW.

Had a claim which went very smoothly. Seamless even.

OTOH I spent more on the warranty than I would have if I'd just put the 3 years of warranty cost into the one repair which happened.

I don't think I'd mess with one unless it was offered by the manufacturer.
