Audi TT-RS [8J]

SLK 55 AMG [R171]

Looking for a small coupe for my daily commute, and these two are on my shortlist.

Both can be had for around the same money.

Priority is not b-road driving 'handling', it's needs to be able to do the daily slog well.

Both engines in these cars interest me, and would add some excitement to the commute.

If it were you making the choice, which one would you go for?

I looked and researched into both when getting my car and I chose the TT RS. Something about the 5 cyl turbo that sounded totally different to most other cars that I liked. Also 4WD great for the rainy days. Not to mention goes like nothing else in the price range.

But it's all a preference thing. If you can drive both smile

AMG but mainly because I've had so many VAG cars, I feel it's time for a change

Im sure the TT would be far more devastating on a B road BUT the SLK just seems that bit more 'Special', drove one briefly, felt to me like one of those Pod Racer things young Skywalker raced in Star Wars!

Personally, the TTRS.

one of the hardest launching cars in production, apparently.

It will respond well to a map.

Not as precious as the Merc

all weather performance.

Dare i say the Audi will be better on fuel when not giving it the beans

Cheaper road tax

V8 sounds nice, so does a heavily boosted 5 pot smile

Thanks all, will give it some thought.

The all wheel drive is appealing for the TT-RS, but can't help thinking that SLK 55 is like a little pocket SLR lol.

Does anyone have the 0-100mph times for both of these great machines

OP bloody good short list.
Have you sat in both ? You might find seat position/comfort being the deciding factor

I know a mapped TT RS stronic does 0-100 mph in 7.3 ish seconds so the potential is certainly there for it. In stock form I believe it's around 9 secs flat.

The SLK 55 0-100 mph is around 10-10.5 seconds.

Obviously in the dry but i thought there would have been a greater gap between the two (In favor of the Audi)

Out of the 2, it would be the merc, more drama than TT.

But if it was my money I would get a Z4M

Tough one if it was for me. The AMG is probably automatic only? But I prefer RWD over AWD for such cars. But even so, if the TT is available with a real 6 speed manual I would go for it just based on that. But apart from that, the AMG has the edge for me. V8, naturally aspirated, RWD.

All 238bhp/tonne
TTRS 234bhp/tonne

So it’s AWD traction that makes it 0.5-1.0 second quicker to 100mph.
5 cylinder warble is lovely (I remember my Fiat Coupe 20VT)
8 cylinder burble AMG style is special too really special

OP don’t think you can go wrong TBH either way

Appreciate the recommendations on BMW's but I've had a few and fancy a change... the Z4M would certainly hold its value I'm sure.

I found a video of a TT-RS and SLK55 going at it:

^ assuming the TT-RS has S-Tronic gearbox, it does point to the SLK's slower box.... but that V8 noise! biglaugh

I think you're right pal, can't go wrong either way.

I had a passenger ride in the SLK 55 two years ago. I didn't get the chance to drive it, and all I remember is holding on for dear life while the owner let it rip. Never sat in any TT, driving an Audi 5-cylinder is on my list.

With both being performance orientated I know they won't be the comfiest cars out there... but I do wonder of SLK will more compliant on bad roads compared to the TT, I normally hear performance Audi's can have a harsh ride? - I know enough that I would not have one with Mag Ride option... it's supposed to harsh a fk.
