Even in the winter 2 miles on a bike will take 10 mins. How cold and wet can you get in 10 mins?
Do you live in the UK?
yes.

Probably not worth the anxiety of getting a diesel. I don't know what mileage you do at the weekend, but you definitely don't need a vrs during the week imo. I'd take a test drive in a 1.4/1.5 petrol, you may find it's more than adequate

Surely you can just walk 2 miles? It can't be good for your body - let alone DPF etc - to do those kind of distances regularly by car.
How would a 2 mile drive do his body any harm?

^^ A regular 4-mile round trip is the perfect way to get some basic exercise. If person A walked or cycled 4 miles regularly and person B regularly drove, with all other factors being equal, a year later person A is likely to be in decent shape. Person B will feel like their DPF is blocked. wink

I'm guessing that the majority of the OP's call outs won't be at 3am, but they of course know best and are responsible for their own decisions.

But how do you know that he doesnt already do exercise? Driving a few miles wont do your body any harm, but not doing any exercise will.

I'm a little surprised to read some of the comments above: I thought this was a motoring enthusiasts' forum.

As ZX10 and others have said above, your proposed use is likely to be the worst possible for a DPF equipped vehicle. If you don't travel in the LEZ, or the up-coming ULEZ, a pre-DPF diesel would be fine - the Fabia VRS is great fun, or the cheaper 1.9TDI SEAT might be fun.

I really liked my petrol Octavia VRS. I used it for 2 years for everything I do regularly and it never missed a beat. It returned about 28mpg on my 10 mile commute (no doubt I should have been doing this on a pogo stick) and 35mpg on a run, even after I had it mapped to 225bhp.

For that sort of mileage, you could run almost any petrol luxo barge without serious consequences; just change the oil more frequently than the book recommends because it will get diluted with petrol. I might buy a Jeep SRT8 if I only had 4 miles per day...actually, I might anyway. Regular Italian tunes are a requirement for short commute vehicles - you would enjoy them in an unreasonably thirsty V8!

Buy what you want, but probably not a DPF diesel. An EV might be the eco and sensible thing to buy, just remember that they don't have any pistons and they whine, which annoys some...
