just bought a used car from a main dealer. specifically asked about the main dealer service history, when it's next due and so on. Even my old Avensis, I still got serviced at Toyota, just one of my things.

salesman said next service in about 20k or two years, car will show when, driving style depending, flashed the service book but said it's no longer stamped, all electronic records to stop fraudulent books etc. big check list carried out etc.

got the car home and started browsing through the books. found the service book has been stamped, only once by main dealer in 50k (current mileage) at 37k. other services at joe bloggs garage at 15k with boxes incorrectly checked and a 'small' service at a local garage at 47k. service history print out shows the one MD service.

Feeling pretty stupid now, and to be honest, absolutely furious at the deceipt. much as i like the car, i really want to return it. no MD history to me devalues the car and I'm concerned about potential failures coming, especially seeing the obvious service items checked that don't relate to this model. Am i being petty ot am i right?

Was it an "approved" used car?
Some marques offer a 30 day swap if you're not happy.

I wouldn't be worried about problems with the car just because it hasn't been serviced at a main dealer, they only change the oil and pollen filter anyway.

Did the advert state full MD SH?

You could reject on grounds of ‘not as described’.

I assume they gave you a proper warranty for at least a year? To be honest if it were me I'd be annoyed, but so long as the oil was changed it does not matter. There will be a slight impact on value i guess, depends when you plan to sell it 1yr? 5yrs?

Worth going back playing merry hell. Say you asked to see the book but was told it was electronic. Show them the book you found and why its unacceptable to be misled.

Either try to swap for another car or gun for an extra year warranty for peace of mind.

OP has been misled. Some people set a lot of stock in a MD history so could affect future value slightly. If evidence is there in the ad, I'd ask for a refund. If not, I'd plaster the story of this liar all over the internet. Lesson to learn, if it's an electronic record, get a printout

If it were a Ferrari or other prestige marque I’d agree with you, but it’s a Toyota.

The lack of MD history will affect the value by percentages of percentages.

If the car has been serviced properly and is in good condition, enjoy it and worry about more important stuff.

This.

Worth mentioning your concerns to the dealer though, you may get a freebie.

If they led you to believe it had a main dealer service history then you've been miss sold.

You can demand a refund.

I agree it doesn't affect the value much on a Toyota, but for me it would be the principal of having been mislead.

its all aboit interpretation, it is a full history if one stamp exists from a main dealer. plus other services from elsewhere, if they are within the manufacturers timescale it really makes little to no odds who did a oil/filter change 2years ago.

Many years ago I decided to get a newer car on finance instead of having sheds.

I saw something half decent and asked about the service history, excuses followed excuses and it became a real issue and deal breaker when the service book did not appear.

The day came to collect the car and a service book was handed over, I set off home and when stuck in traffic had a quick look at the service book, IT WAS FOR A DIFFERENT CAR! same make and model but reg' did not match.

I rang the slimeball salesman (horrible little man) and told him in no uncertain terms to be there when I came back, the paperwork would be ripped up and I would be leaving in my old car.

LOL there were a couple of people in the showroom when I got back and I made it known what I thought of the salesman. They left. I left in our old car that I had traded in. (Then ran out of petrol on the way home).

all this over a little stamp, i mean the car can be serviced outside md without effecting warranty, which i think would have expired by now. Worried about future value, is this a special model or just run of the mill.

They don’t often look, as silly as it sounds. There is usually a clear divide between the service and sales department. Many times I’ve witnessed a smug salesman’s face drop after they’ve taken in a vehicle, and they ask me to double check the service history only to be told in three years it’s never seen a main dealer.

It’s out of warranty so it doesn’t really have much bearing, however they did cock up by misleading you and that is of course, unacceptable. OP if you have been mislead as you are suggesting, you have options. You could demand they return your money which may prove difficult, or I would be happy with a full service with all the bells and whistles at their expense.

I don’t know how long you keep your cars, but say you sell it in 3/4 years, it will be past the mid way point of it’s so called “useful life” and no one is going to care a ste about it’s early service history. I doubt you’ll lose out.

That being said, I reiterate, the dealer messed up, and in one way or another they owe you a good turn.
