Hi looking to buy vw golf i have bin considering a 2012 1.4 tsi with around 50k on the clock or possibly a older gti with a bit more milage what are your thaughts am I being silly here? When I look at spending around 6 grand on a golf I start to see other cars such as a4 that could be a better bet any advice would be great as I’m not masively in to cars but we gotta start somewhere.

The 1.4TSI golf comes in 2 power outputs. The 122hp is a relatively reliable engine, sometimes having timing chain issues but appart from that okay. The 160hp 1.4TSI found in the Golf GT is a completely different engine to the 122 and is known for being more troublesome, timing chain failure, supercharger etc.

The other more boring option is an Audi A3 with the 1.6 Petrol engine. Although very slow (101bhp) theyre a relatively reliable old fashioned engine.

RE the golf GTI at your budget you’re probably looking at a clean MK5/ Early high mile MK6. The MK5 would be my vote, 2.0TFSI is a very good engine as long as it’s been serviced and had the timing belt changed. For your budget you should be able to get a really nice one.

I currently have a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 zetec the engine runs great it’s a bit bashed up and I’ve had a 3 Fords now so wouldn’t mind trying a golf the look a lot nicer the 1.4 tsi 122 hp would probably suit me fine I do mainly short journeys 7 mile trip to work and pick the kids up that sort of stuff, will try and look for nice model with low miles and that has had the timing chain already done if possible I would consider a gti but it would a be a lot older car and it would probably be ahead ache to maintain compared to standard 1.4.

Some alternatives -

Alfa Giulietta, high miles but had turbo water pump and cambelt done - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Vauxhall Insignia, bigger car but 1.8 - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

If you push the budget slightly, a Seat Leon, similar to the MK7 golf but with a few nice toys (LED headlights for one!) - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

That engine is awful, yes very slow but also very lethargic, no zest for being driven hard whatsoever
- Id avoid completely

(My wife had a 1.6 A3, never again)

Have you thought about leasing ?

For 5 grand you could probably lease a brand new Golf GTI for 2 years and have some change.

Or on PCP put £5,000 up front and finance a GTI.

Indeed, there were a few stock vehicles around that could be had for sensible money.

The tomtom arrangement is strange you can buy one with the built in system but not at the OP's budget the boot is a decent size rear legroom is dependent on how tall you most people who I source these to are happy with it (I'm 6'7 so no one ever sits behind me in a hatchback) try one for size.

They're actually a very good car the 1.4T is proving to be robust & reliable, overall I rate it as a good car one that I'm happy to recommend.

The Alfa looks like a pretty decent car but they don’t seem that common wich could mean parts could cost more when things go wrong ? Still got my heart sort of set on a golf going to view a 1.4 tsi 2012 in the morning it’s not auto see how it goes I’ve bin thinking as I have kids it might be worth looking at a vw Passat for size but I like having a smaller car to park and that

No more expensive than VAG parts also there are lots of Alfa Mito's/Fiat 500's (in fact most small petrol engines in the FCA ranges use this drivetrain) that use the same drivetrain, the Giulietta sells in good numbers the only let down can be the main dealers but find a good Indy & you'll be fine.

We are awaiting delivery on a new lease for the Mrs. Golf 1.5 EVO SE Nav in Urano grey
It’s a 1+23 profile, 5k p/a, at £202 a month so just under budget plus it should be on 24mth servicing so we likely won’t need to pay for anything other than fuel/insurance
