Sorry but it has to be done,

Why not a 335d xdrive? Will sound a lot better than your 5, one with M sport plus pack and pro nav gives you all the toys you need and it will be a rocket off the line and a rocket while you’re moving. Plus, the 8 speed box is miles better and quicker than the 6ZF you have in your 5.

Or just sod it and get an M135i/40i?

I like the Golf R but the build quality will be rubbish compared to your 5 series and you’ll regret it eventually once the novelty wears off, plus all they do is pop and fart which is embarrassing unless you’re 21.

I say the quality is bad as my friend has a MK7.5 GTI and honestly, from the seats to the dash to the door trims, it’s a budget car. Once you look past how handsome it is, it’s all clear.

I was going to suggest an M135i/M140i but another PHer beat me to it. I would also suggest taking a look at the 335i/ 435i as well

Worth also considering a GTI.

Dyno at around ~256bhp so only marginally less power-weight than an R, less nickable and better fuel economy (42mpg for my drive in this morning).

I’m sorry too but after having our mk7 R for about 18 months I’ve never heard it fart or pop and I’ve been very happy with the build quality... horses for courses and all that, but I think it’s a great car and love driving it.

I guess it depends on how it’s driven re the dsg fart/noises it makes when you change gear but I’ve never seen one accelerate and change gear without making that noise.

It definitely is a great car and I’m not doubting that but the OP is moving from an E60 530d and will be paying a lot of money on top to get the Golf R which is why I think it’s a bad idea as it’s going to be a step down from the 5. Hence it being a ‘budget’ car. Because it’s a very expensive and powerful version of what it’s meant to be, an affordable, family hatchback.

Only the op can say whether he’d prefer a budget hatch to a diesel 5 series, but I would rather have the golf any day, but we’re all different. I’ve heard a lot of Audi’s farting when changing gear but my wife’s golf doesn’t even when changing on the redline, which I did several times today. Maybe I need mine remapping to be more flatulent laugh

If it was a choice between the 2, I’d also have the Golf R, hell I’d have a Golf R over a F10 530d, but the OP already has a boxter S for fun and presumably chose the 530d for comfort with power for daily use. The Golf will fall short of comfort and feel cheaper when compared. Note the word, compared. I like the Golf R. Just don’t think it’s a good idea to replace a 530d!

The golf has much better build quality to an e60, maybe you’re getting confused with the e39 5 series which was built properly

310bhp, 4 wheel drive when needed (massive improvement in these conditions compared to my old gti pp), 3 years warranty, all the kit you need, not expensive to run, looks nice and can be had for under 30k. Whats not to like (apart from the sleepless nights obviously)

I love my BMW's but the E60 / 61 is an old car now ( '03 to '10 ). The 6 cylinder Diesels are sweet enough but apart from a mint M5 no way would I see my 7R as a step down. Sure its a chunk of money to pay out for one, but if you have done the homework and ready to switch away from a larger 4 door saloon to a compact hatch then I cannot see anyone being disappointed with a nice R. Its such a neat little package and still up there as one of the finest things there is to drive.

True however my initial suggestion was to go for a 335d x drive, better economy than the 530d, all weather traction, as quick as the Golf R with no step down in build quality for the same price, probably cheaper, Golf R’s hold their money well.

I’m not saying keep the E60, Im not saying the Golf R is bad, im just suggesting an alternative that may make more sense. I was in a friends 535d the other day and it’s a seriously impressive car, bar the big steering wheel, the interior is ace.

Exactly this the boxster is for fun and is fun and the golf would be a daily, well saying that I haven't used the bm in 10 days

I do love the bmw brand and I have saved on my watch list a 235i 335d and 435d but the current generation of f30 is basically the same size as my e61 which is ridiculous.

There is all this fuss going on at the moment re diesel charging and emission zones etc etc etc and Southampton where I work will be bringing in a charge which has got me thinking no to all diesels hence the R, the 235i is fantastic and that engine noise!!!! I saw one with the m performance kit on and it looks amazing I also love the M2, probably the best M car at the moment with the looks and size and sound.

I agree about the 8 speed being brilliant BUT it hasn't got anywhere near the toys the r does (I love my gadgets) android auto, radar cruise, 4wd etc etc etc but no head up display which the 435d does have, and I imagine a remmaped 35d would eat a R on the move, bar back roads but then we are back to a big car again.

The 335d X-Drive is a good shout, and I have considered one in Touring form. They sound lovely ( for a Diesel ) and are pretty rapid. A different car to the Golf R and no where near as sharp or as much fun IME.

If you like BMW's then why not go for something that's BMW+, it may not have 4WD but it's a level above the Golf435d & 235i:

Here's a review of the D3:

If 4WD is a must then there's these to lookout for:

i have to be honest if it has to VAG & 4WD I'd be buying an RS3:
