It’s been bugging me for a while, but I think I need to scratch that itch. I am one of few people who love the S and X Type. I love the way they look, I haven’t driven one but they can’t be terrible, surely? The need for a slightly bigger car on occasion has arisen, although I’m not selling my 330ci, as it’s the best car I’ve ever owned and I can’t bear to part with it.

What can I expect if I were to drop around £2.5k on a circa 2005/2006 (pre tax hike) 3.0 Sport with circa 80-120k on the clock? It’ll do less than 3000 miles a year and is really only for occasional use when the 330 won’t be quite big enough. With the X I wouldn’t be adverse to the estate, but I really only like either car in Sport guise. I specifically do not want a pre facelift S Type! Guessing auto is more common, and actually for me, and this car preferable, but wouldn’t say no to a manual. I know they rust, less so post 2004 apparently, primarily the reason I want a 2005/2006 model.

Cheers.

Nothing wrong with wanting an x type, if you wanted the s type then surely it has to be the v8 ?

Don't know much about them but an aquantance has one of these and the V8 in it sounds sublime...

I can relate to the OP's sentiments - I still need to scratch the itch of Jaguar ownership.

I've had a few Mercs and 6 BMWs, but owning a Jaguar was always a boyhood dream!

I know they regularly get slated, but I really like the looks of the S Type - maybe that needs to go on the "to do" list for this year! laugh

The s type is a bit of a luxo barge and very cheap for what you get. I had one as a courtesy car years ago when my x300 XJ was in for a service and was very impressed. As above I would go for the V8, well, because its a V8..... most if not all are autos (my XJ x300 was a manual)

The X type gets slated a lot based on its "mondeo" heritage, mostly by people who have never been anywhere near one. They are nice, small exec cars. Probably no bigger than your 330 though, unless you go for the estate, which i prefer the look of over the saloon.

2.5k will buy you a nice example of either car. Early x types pre 2004 do rust, but later ones do not. I had a 56 plate which I sold about a month ago (bought an XJ Super v8). The X Type did not have any rust. For your mileage I would go for the V6... The diesel 2.2 is better than the 2.0 if you want to run on tractor juice (mine was due to a 100 mile a day commute - but still quite refined with decent power). X-types can be had in manual or auto. Mine was a six speed manual which I think suited the car - I don't think auto would have.

As with any older car, tired/thrashed/abused models should be avoided, but there are plenty of decent ones out there.

For the past 2.5 years I've been running a 2007 X Type 2.2D as a commuter car (250 mile journey twice a week). It's just ticked over 140k with about 70k in my ownership.

I concur with the above, its a decent car. Compare it with a much newer car and of course the world has moved on. But, for me its quiet, decently comfortable and suits me. Yes the Sat Nav feels like a 1980 ZX Spectrum and the steering wheel is an odd brown colour.

Lots of Mondeo parts but I'm sure I read somewhere that some things like the engine map is unique to Jag (could be wrong on this). Anyway this makes for easy/cheap parts availability and actually there is nothing wrong with a Mondeo!.

The Mondeo reputation means that prices are on the floor - my is going in May and I suspect I'll be lucky to get much more than £500 for it which is extraordinary value IMO for a car where everything still works (even the air-con is still ice-cold!).

Go for it I say - although I would get a V6 for the miles you do.

I did over 80,000 miles in my S-Type over 8 years and absolutely loved it. Best car I've had.

Lots of buyers guides around, but briefly look for the following:
Auto-box needs oil-changes every 60-80,000 to keep them reliable. Don't believe tales that they have to use the OE mega-expensive fluid - it's a myth.
They eat tyres unless OE gripless Pirellis are used, and don't like soft sidewalled tyres.
Suspension bushes need doing every 80,000 or so - OE is best and can now be had from Jag specialists at a good price.
Rust can start under the sill-covers, but it's difficult to detect. Earlier cars were worse for this.
Rear pads and discs don't last long for some reason, and fronts aren't much better. Bits are dead cheap, though.
Diesels need MAFs and EGRs doing anywhere between 100-130,000 miles - again, not too expensive if done by someone who knows what they're doing.
And finally, a very small percentage of engines (diesel mainly IIRC) go pop randomly when a big-end shell spins. The vast majority seem to be OK.

If I was getting another, I'd have the V8. smile

Thanks all, I won’t discount the V8, fuel doesn’t really matter too much but as long as it’s as reliable as the V6 I don’t see why not...

I had a 3.0 S-Type, absolutely loved it. Real sense of occasion driving it around, the tactile feel of the metal & walnut gear change and the walnut steering wheel. Beautifully insulated from outside sounds once you close the drivers door. The engine was great, a good bit of poke if you booted it in sports mode and it dropped a cog or two, and the V6 sounded great too. Would buy again in a heartbeat.

I’ve owned E39’s and an E46, I think I’m well qualified. I probably earn less than an S Type was new!

I had a S-type R. 56 plate, 100k miles, traded it in 3 years ago for £4k, so don't pay too much.

I had an X-type estate before that, but it was only a 2.1 petrol and could have done with more acceleration - I would look for a 2.5/3.0 with AWD.

Why? These cars are not partucularly expensive to run and are supported by a good network of specialists and indys.

Certainly my x type was no more expenive to run than the mondeo everyone says it is based on and parts for my current XJ are not massively expensive. Just stay away from main dealers (like any other marque)
