Help.

Need new van, think transit custom size 6m vol and 1.2 ton payload, must be auto and do sub 10kpa.

Fit out is essential racks, deadlocks etc which costs a fair bit so I look to buy outright and keep it till its no good, it's a tool I don't care how old it is or what powers it. I also have a particular tax incentive to buy rather than lease. I've been wanting to replace it a couple of years with constantly promised phev/ev vans always a few months away. The problem is all that's on the market is diesel (and a hilairiously priced petrol vw) but with the witch hunt against diesel now it'd be mad to buy something long term. But it's urgent, current vito is 11 years old and quite literally falling apart.

what do i do?

Euro 6 will be fine for quite a while to come. The future ULEZ plans are to extend it outwards, but with the same restrictions (Euro 4 for petrol, Euro 6 for diesels), and any outright ban would have to be many years past that.

Right now there's only the eNV200 or Kangoo which are too small and the Renault Master or LDV which are both silly money.

Transit PHEV won't be until towards the end of the year at best.

problem is everyones on the diesel how-can-we-profit witch hunt bandwagon; several london boroughs charge punishment rates for on-street parking for those who "choose to drive a diesel" and you the others wont be far behind. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the LEZ zone rules modified within 3-4 years either. and gawd knows what else they'll scheme up.

Christ all I want to do is drive my tools around!

Think your concerns are legitimate but realistically you have little choice in your situation

I was in a similar frame of mind over what to buy as a new car engine wise with so much uncertainty, I came from a diesel but was a bit worried spending maybe 50k on a replacement while it’s all still unknown.

What I done in the end was take a lease agreement on what I was after over 4yrs, let someone else take the financial risk, and any potential hit should some hardball tactics be used in future to get diesel off the road, then in 4yrs time if it’s all still as unclear and ev as unlikely to take off as it is now and more importantly be affordable to buy, i’ll probably buy the diesel from the lease company and run it as long as I can. I’ve bought at the end of lease terms previously, to a very good result and always been offered a price to buy come end of the term.

That’s my plan.

I think we’re still in the vhs/Betamax stage of ev’s and something else new technologies will be developed in the short term. Cobalt and lithium battery power is not sustainable en mass and is too expensive.

Get a diesel, just let someone else take the overall financial risk.

Thanks, dont want to start a lease v own debate as there's a few spaces for them but personally don't want or think its best and thats before the fact I can claim VAT back on capex but not rental, which makes the van 20% cheaper if I buy and pretty much means but for the payment spread there isn't much cost difference to me between renting it for 4 years and buying outright.

Then the lease co will want $$$$ compo for every scratch and modification and screwhole etc

Get a Euro6 van & you'll be fine if you have to park in a borough that charges more for diesel parking then pass the charge on (this is what I do & my customers are fine with it) I'd buy a Euro6 van also remember the ULEZ will be rolled out to the North & South Circular so don't go & buy a LEZ compliant van because then you will take a tanking trade in wise in a few years time.

its my only option isn't it? Pass any charges on of course but thinking more long term strategic, while you can pass costs on its better if you dont have too..

Considered Secondhand van as interim, but prefer new as vans get wrecked and it will be euro 5 or less (and try finding an auto)

citreon/pug make an auto that's a bit cheaper, not enough I think, ford should have better residual should i chop it in? VW/merc too but several grand dearer which I'd rather not find, plus merc..... Never again.

So ford custom diesel my only option right?

Couple of misconceptions there. Commercial vans leases can claim 100% of the VAT on all rental payments.

Secondly the BVLRA rules for Vans are far more lax than for cars.

https://issuu.com/bfwsn67/docs/bvrla_fair_wear_and...

E.g rust is acceptable in some areas....

flat rate vat scheme has particular rules that differ from regular vat books. As for wear and tear I'm not talking it needs paint correction.
