Negotiating advice please
Discussion
I'm thinking of px'ing my MX5 Z-Sport, which is a sought-after limited edition, for a new MX5, one with the newly announced more powerful engine.
I'm after some advice from people who've successfully managed to get the best deal possible from a salesman (or saleswoman or whatever).
I heard on the radio this afternoon a view expressed by a Mr JC (no, not that Clarkson chap, or the other JC, but a Mr J Corbinn) who was stating that the best way is to 'take no deal off the table'.
I've never approached negotiations thay way before but I'm just asking the experts on here, would I be likely to get a great deal on my new MX5 if I tell the salesman, upfront, 'look, let's be quite clear, I'm not leaving the showroom without a deal. I must have the MX5 and I must have a deal'.
I've seen an advisor advertised, a Ms D'Abbott, who seems to work miracles with figures, and who has said it shouldn't cost more than about £250 for a new MX5. Does that sound possible, or is that some funny form of sums?
What are my chances of clinching the deal of the century?

Make sure you spend 2 years discussing the deal with the dealer before revealing the details to your wife, who will almost certainly kick it out just out of principal. Also, despite the new MX5 initially looking like a great deal from that advert you saw on the side of a bus in 2016, it may end up costing you about £40bn more than you had budgeted for so make sure you can fit that into your monthly payments once you account for mortgage, bills etc.

Negotiations may go on and on with some sort of deadlock... is there a financial Backstop that can help the process? Or come April, will you just keep the same Mazda?I'm after some advice from people who've successfully managed to get the best deal possible from a salesman (or saleswoman or whatever).

I've found it works better if you walk in with a loaded gun, point it at your temple and say 'if you don't give me a great deal I'll shoot myself, then I'll shoot you!'TarquinMX5 said:

You're right to be unconvinced. The key thing is that you need to keep your existing MX-5, that way you always have the option of walking away from the dealership if they won't offer you a good deal on the new car. The worst thing you could do would be to, say, sell your car first and promise the buyer they can pick it up on 29th March - that way you would be obliged to accept whatever the Mazda salesman offers you, or end up walking everywhere from April onwards! As long as you keep the status quo as a fallback, you should be ok either way.I've never approached negotiations that way before but I'm just asking the experts on here, would I be likely to get a great deal on my new MX5 if I tell the salesman, upfront, 'look, let's be quite clear, I'm not leaving the showroom without a deal.
