Won't be as nice to drive as the 6cyl Merc or BMW but for comfort, space and reasonable running costs something like this would be hard to beat:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Just for a bit of closure to this thread, I ended up buying a 2013 Mercedes E250 CDI Estate.

I looked at a Skoda Superb (a 2015 SEL Business model fully loaded with almost every option) and found it plenty roomy but a bit unexciting and very similar to being in my Golf, and also felt a bit slow (150BHP TDI version) after trying the BMW.

I had intended to look at a Jag but I was so impressed with the Merc (which came from a main dealer with FMBSH and a 12 month warranty) that I decided to end my search and buy it for a little under £12.5k.

Obligatory pics (Merc are going to refurb the wheels before I collect the car):

Looks nice, congrats! Good to see a final result as well instead of just disappearing!

Was looking at the testimonials on there - he seems to buy and manage cars for the rich and / or famous?

Nice choice! We went through similar last year and end up with a 520d. Other than an airbag (fixed under warranty), it’s been great.

I bought my late 2014 520d M-sport touring for £14K with 95K on the clock in Jan 2018. I'm about to sell it now with 130K on it, no problems at all except a head unit that was changed under warranty. Great car. PM me if you're interested - I was going to WBAC it as I'm going for a lease for a couple of years but would sell to a PHer - so long as I can avoid the "best offer M8" types!
