Hello All - in terms of getting the most cost-efficient, ULEZ compliant daily commuter (50 mile round trip on mainly A roads), with an automatic gearbox and under 7k, which one of the above hybrids would people go for?

Particularly interested to hear from people with experience of owning / having owned at least one of these.

I've driven all of them extensively & the Auris/Prius are good for around town but when you get on the open road their fuel economy takes a hit & they're not the nicest (in the case of the Prius) place to be on long journeys, I'd take the Peugeot/Citroen option every time as they give great economy around town then when on a run they get better & you won't be working the engine half as hard as you will do the other two.

Assuming that the Peugeot is 1st choice, what's preferable between the Prius and the Auris (sounds like the Auris)? Any thoughts on the Peugeot's reliability?

Auris is a better car. Prius is more economical but it has some drawbacks compared to Auris. It is a myth that 1.8 HSD take a hit in a long journey. It is always a very economican and RELIABLE drivetrain. 4th gen Prius is genuinely a great car and the most economical car what i have ever driven.

Peugeot is still hit and miss. 508 was option for us too, but we decided against it. That was a new car tho….

I agree the Auris is the car you want to be in compared to the Prius but both weren't s economical on long stints when I've driven them, The Peugeot/Citroen had a few issues when they were first released but most issues were software related & will have been sorted by now.

I bought my Mrs an Auris.... the auto is not strictly an auto - it's a peculiar gearbox. I wouldn't buy another.

The Auris would be my pick out of the two petrol hybrids, there is also the option of the Lexus CT200 it's a nicer place to sit but you pay the premium to do so on a car with the same drive train.

The 508/DS5 are proving to be trouble free which is to be expected the ICE drive train is already well proven reliability wise & the hybrid system works well.

A real world 60+ mpg around town has been achieved by a few of my clients but mid to high 50's seems to be the normal which for people traveling around Central/Greater London is very good the equivalent normal 508 (with the same 2.0d engine) would be mid to high 30's in normal commuting conditions.

On the open road these come into their own, I've also noticed prices are firming up with, ULEZ being spoken about more people are starting to realise these were made & are ULEZ compliant so they get the best of both worlds, along with the extra power & torque these have on the open road/motorway they make for a more relaxing drive overallas well as the nice bonus of £0.00 road tax.

The one downside is they're hard to find which means you're a bit limited but that wouldn't stop me from getting one.

It's hard to look past one of these if you want a nice mix of economy space & comfort especially with the Motorway element.

We run both Auris and Prius as taxis, and run Peugeot hdi engines.

Our Prius (albeit a plus) averages 48mpg and does 1500 miles a week. Its better in town and struggles to better 45mpg on the motorway.

The Auris, exactly the same hybrid system and engine averages 60mpg over the same week. Can't work out why. Weight perhaps? Aero dynamics?

We have run 407s for over 300,000 miles averaging 48-50mpg from the 2.0hdi and get the same fro a Citroen C5 estate that is currently on 330,000 miles.

The French cars are more comfortable but there's nothing wrong with the Toyotas. Given a choice I'd rather sit all day in the French car. The Toyotas are boring, but hugely reliable, the French cars like preventative maintenance. Don't wait to see what that knock over a bump is, get it fixed. Otherwise a ball joint becomes a lower wishbone and tyre and anything else the Gallic machine can throw into the mix.

The Toyotas can be quite harsh as they accelerate due to the CVT, they are much better suited to town than motorway.

Peugeot will be cheaper to buy, arguably cheaper to run, but won't hold its value as well, but better outside town for economy.

So which one of the 3 would you have given the current criteria? Seems to me that the majority are leaning towards the 508. The Lexus suggested above seems like a good option, if a little pricey. Can't justify spending above 7k on a commuter car.

I may be incorrect but all of those PSA options aren't ULEZ compliant, presumably due to the diesel aspect of the hybrid powertrain.
https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicl... I keyed in their plates on the TFL website here and all of them came up as not compliant, so I would run anything you find past that first so you don't end up buying something thats not right for you.

Same question for you - given the criteria, which would you have? Sounds like it would be the 508?

I would run anything you're considering through here https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicl... as I don't believe the 508 actually is ULEZ compliant.

Most cost efficient is a Prius. No doubt about it. I did own a 2006 Prius and it was a very cheap car to run and own. I do drive a lot, so i want to keep cost as low as possible fo daily driver. Cheapest car to own.

Personally i would go for Auris. Servicing is cheap and it is better to drive than 3rd gen Prius. It is not as economical in the highway as Prius and it has smaller boot. Still a better car i think.

I wouldn't buy used European car if i want to have a cost effective transportation. My DD is Jeep at the moment, so mpg is not great. It is very cheap to service and that's the difference maker when you factor all the costs.

Yes. For a number of reasons. These may or may not fit your criteria...

1. Crap car great taxi. It has to cost as little as possible in the first place because a roof light is a slow death. It will have stellar mileage by the time I'm finished with it and be worthless. I see no point in high upfront costs for a Merc/Audi/BMW when they generate the same revenue as a much cheaper car. Its vanity and bad business practice.
2. Economy and reliability. Obviously a trade off with the above. But maintain a French
car properly and it will serve you well.
3. Comfort. If one of my drivers is sat in it all day, it must be comfortable. French cars are second only to Volvo in this department imho.


Be aware that bits will fall off the Peugeot though. But my Prius is not perfect, it has developed a buzzy rattle in the driver's door somewhere.

I can't comment on the ULEZ, as I'm in Devon. But it appears my 2006 Supercharged Range Rover is compliant, as is my dad's 1999 Octavia, but a 2014 1.6hdi C4 Grand Picasso isn't.

I've had customers purchase them & have them as ULEZ compliant so yes it's worth checking.

Any chance you could give us a brief explanation on here? Will the Auto feel much different to a layman used to driving Autos?
