Hi guys,

Looking at buying one of these -

Can I get away with this as a family car, as in expecting a baby? Fit in a pram etc.

Thanks

Plenty of room in the rear, despite the looks. Great family car.

If you take a look on YouTube at the carwow channel I’m pretty sure Matt has reviewed it. He usually does an in-depth practicality video to go alongside the general review.

He does. Love Matt he is brilliant. Only puts a suitcase in and I want to know about family life.

My wife absolutely loves hers. The boot was a step up from her previous convertible, but it’s not huge. Quite roomy for rear seat passengers considering the size of the car and plenty of room for shopping, kids sports gear, etc., but I wouldn’t want to put anything other than a small dog in the back. Watch the carwow/carbuyer YouTube videos to see what they fit in the back and take your pram along to the dealership.

This being PH you will be told to get something else less ghastly.

Possible options include a Toyota GT86 with steel wheels, Mazda MX-5 and possibly a Bristol Blenheim.

How big is the pram - have you been and looked at one?

In my experience yes they can be (in 4 door guise)

The boot isn't huge but it is big enough for what you need. They aren't quick but they are fast enough. They aren't great to drive but good enough. But they do look great; the ultimate MILF wagon. Mrs R loves hers! biggrin

I wouldn’t suggest using it as a family car if you plan to keep it long term.

There is ample space in the back for a child seat, however the boot isn’t very good. The back of the car slopes off and the floor of the boot is high, so it’s a compromised space with little depth and easily filled by a pram - with little to no space for anything else.

When we had the evoque my daily was a Mk7 Golf GTi and that had more usable space as a family car.

Don’t look at the Evoque as a SUV with more space than a hatch. It’s simply a standard size hatch on stilts. On top of that a hatch (say a golf GTD) is better to drive, more economical and more reliable!

My wife liked hers, but I think only because of its “style” and purchased it 5yrs ago when they weren’t bloody everywhere!

We got rids of ours when discussions of a 2nd child came about. With a pram in the boot any trip away meant that suitcases etc had to go in the back thus killing space for anybody else.

Disco sport is infinitely more practical and more suited to kid lugging. We swapped the evoque for a 2018 X5 40d - which is obviously a different beast in every area.

Are you looking at the original L538 Evoque or the new L551 one?

New one has a much more usable load space, with much less suspension intrusion and is thus wider at its narrowest point than the old one IYSWIM.

More rear legroom too, which should also mean rear facing baby seats get a little more room as well.

I’ve had three or four L538s and have had an L551 for about three weeks now. The L538 is good, but this one is a much better car all round in my view.

Thanks for all the replies.

It’s the first generation. Dynamic model with all the bells and whistles. Does look lovely. Thought about it as you get a decent looking high spec car that won’t eat fuel.

Other option is a q5 or Touareg. But I. Comparison the interiors are ste.

Yes looked at a couple. Wife’s expecting so we don’t have the pram yet. That’s the issue. Trying to forward think.

If you do get one make sure it comes with a warranty. The wife got rid of hers in the end as things kept going wrong with it and Land Rover were painful to get it fixed. It was less than 3 years old when she cut her losses and ditched it.

In the end, the drivers door wouldn’t lock and be didn’t have the patience to go through another warranty claim to get it put right.

I’m sure they can’t all be that bad though...

There is only one reason that people buy an Evoque, and its because of that badge.

Stick a Kia one on the front and it would never sell because there are any number of cars that beat it by whatever parameters you choose.

You could make that argument about a lot of vehicles. At the end of the day, so many factors add up to the enjoyment of motoring, many of which are not rooted in practicality, or even in reality. The OP asked if it could work as a family car, and even the earlier model will work well. Depends what expectations you have.

Not sure I agree with that. After driving touaregs, q5s and a LLE the evouque had the best interior. Much higher quality. It just lacks in boot size.

Tow a caravan. Which according to practical caravan it does incredibly well.

Carry me 17miles to work in stop start traffic.

Be able to cope with a baby.

Also looking decent and getting around 30mpg.

I say go for it. You could enjoy it, and that is the most important thing. I drive one regularly, and would own one happily.
