What is the right image for a business vehicle?
Discussion
I was thinking Subaru Outback or Forrester - either should fit in well in an agricultural environment, and be a better drive than an LR or MB/BMW option.
But this thread made me laugh - some years ago when I worked for an insurance company we sent a loss adjuster to investigate a somewhat involved theft claim for a bicycle, and the claimant was less than impressed when he declined the claim and drove away in his nearly new BMW 530i! (Should have parked out of sight)

produce hugely complex vehicles.
snipThat's kind of the point. Perhaps they should dial-back the complexity* in the name of reliability, especially as they are still trading on the image of a world-conquering off road icon.
*I know that ship has sailed, they are now just another pseudo-luxury brand no different to Audi, MB or BMW

Perhaps. Or at least have a properly basic version available for those not wanting all the extra things that can go wrong. That's kind of the point. But isn’t the complexity mainly due to having to make a 2.5 tonne vehicle drive and handle like a car on the road yet perform like a proper off-reader when off road? It’s pretty much the only way to achieve both. Plus you can no longer just stick a big, unstressed V8 in a car, it has to be powerful but still efficient and again that causes problems.
I agree, the Land Cruiser would have the right image but they’re dog slow, don’t drive particularly well on road and, strangely, are way more expensive to buy on PCP - if that’s how you choose to do it. A £50k Land Cruiser was about the same price as a top of the range £70k Disco.
Oh and I went petrol D5 to try and avoid some of the diesel problems like oil dilution (sort of admitting that there are reliability problems, I know!). Calling it ‘thirsty’ would be an understatement, but it drives great!
