Discussion
A few suggestions:
None will set your hair on fire but they are cheap to run, comfortable for mway and reasonably equipped.

Awful seats compared to the old HST trains with nice big leather ones (first class obviously )
I would prefer a Yaris on the motorway
I agree that a car would be better than a train on the motorway. I would prefer a Yaris on the motorway
I have no train beard whatsoever and just picked a generic LNER train Picture.
I wasn't thinking that make/model of train in particular.
But still useful info for the OP, if he does let the train take the strain.

I agree doing the edinburgh/newcaste travel is ideally suited to train as long as booked well enough in advance. Nothing better than a quick day trip to Edinburgh from Gods Country I have no train beard whatsoever and just picked a generic LNER train Picture.

Some good options already mentioned, another is an Octavia 1.9 TDi elegance (or L&K for leather) - £2k would get you a decent early MK2. No DPF and cheap to service/maintain, great 70mph economy and a comfy place for the distance journey.
2.0tdi (PD not CR) is also good (trades a little better refinement for a little less reliability, but still in the same ballpark).

I see no issue with a Yaris for a bit of motorway driving. A 2008 petrol or diesel powered one will fit the criteria of being able to do 70mph, 50mpg , cheap to tax and reliable.
Or you could join the 320D crowd... not so certain it ticks any of the criteria other than some being available for £2k with the potential for repairs of a similar value.
I cant imagine it would be very refined or comfortable for that sort of thing compared to the other cars mentioned here, especially as OP is buying it with the intention of using it as a motorway car. Surely you would want something more suited to the intended job that can still be reliable and cheap?

We are talking about barely 10 year old cars not 1970s 1.0l cars with 40hp an 2mm thick door cards and 500g of sound deadening.Surely you would want something more suited to the intended job that can still be reliable and cheap?
I've driven a couple of 2008> Yarises (?) as courtesy/rental cars and the last one I had even had cruise control. It sat at around 2600-2800rpm at 70ish mph and you could hustle it along quite well. The seats were comfortable, it had all kinds of bluetooth/streaming/sat nav crap that people like, the heaters/Air Con worked fine, the headlights were particularly good. It was a perfectly fine tool.
OP - Do you do any of the maintenance/repairs on your cars? It's all good people recommending a 2003 BMW 320d with 150k on it if you don't mind doing jobs on it but if you want something that better fits your criteria for hassle free id go smaller , newer, Japanese.
