PCPers can walk away, but will likely still need transport, even if not immediately.
As I understand it, you can just give the car back and not choose to buy it for its over-inflated balloon value ..... so you walk away .. then after about 50 yards you turn round and go back to ask them how much it would be to buy it!
But they will be collecting the car and it disappears to the auction so where will you be walking back to and who will you be asking?

Well, as at right now Autotrader has the usual 536,000 cars for sale. How can that be if we're not allowed to buy them?

Nothing stopping you buying them at all. Justifying collecting one as a 'necessary' journey if you're asked is another thing.

In built up areas like near me, there are cars for sale within 1 mile, I could walk to look at them (not that I need another car at the moment frown )

With many dealers shut, private sales are the only way for some. If their car is broken, they may not have anywhere nearby that it can be fixed!

Do you want to meet a stranger in close proximity at the moment? How will that work? He chucks the keys on the ground and you spray them? He sits in the boot while you go for a test drive?

You might not only be picking up a ropey car..

AT are offering traders payment holidays and stock listing offers as incentive to carry on advertising

Garage forecourts arent allowed to be open, but businesses are still allowed to trade. Nothing to stop a dealer selling you a car after a video link chat, finance completed online and bringing the car to you. Many are doing that.

BUT, i'd think many of the adds on A/T are still there because the sellers havent bothered cancelling them.

Glad to hear you say that.

I dropped one off today to a customer and wasn't sure of the advice given from the Government.

Easy job as there was a PX to come back in.

I'm not sure I fancy the tubes/trains at the moment.

Yes, businesses are still allowed to trade providing they can cater for social distancing (if people cant work from home).

That definitely wouldn't work for me, I really like to look at a car (& feel it) before buying it. Used cars aren't like other goods; you can have two cars with identical descriptions but be very different.

May well work for others though.

we're now going to be very quickly in to the realms of people only changing because they "need" to change.
Which will likely firm up and and may even result in the value of used cars rising.
I think people will put off changing their car for as long as possible. Granted, as i said, some people will need to make a move if they're at the end of a PCP or lease term, but a lot of people wont.
I agree, once the dust of this coronavirus problem settles I think the motor industry is in for a difficult time; discretionary purchases of cars aren't likely to be high on the priority list for many so personally I think it will be very much a buyer's market later this year. In fact, there are already signs of used values dropping; as an example, a reputable independent local to me has an F-Type S which was advertised at £33,990 last week but which has now been reduced to £29,990 with the advert saying "the price is reflective of the current climate" - a taste of things to come l suspect.

Autotrader extended the validity of most "live" adverts to the end of April so adverts are not expiring.

I take it WBAC is active again

Anyone sold a car to them this month? How awful was the deal?

Their prices are excellent right now, as auction prices at BCA are through the roof. If you have a mint car or you describe it properly they are bidding very high for certain cars.

Bloody hell. They were valuing our M140i at £18,000 a week ago.

Now up to £19,135.

That's only to entice you in so they can bud you down to £18k

Oh i know. Though at £18K they'd have chipped me back to £17K.

Its really just a baseline indicator of where the market is at.

No intentions of selling it or taking it anywhere near them if i was.
