I had a quick search but couldn't find anything that matched my scenario exactly.

If a seller has recently applied [online] to have the registration on a car they are selling switched from their private plate back to the original plate, but the new V5C doesn't arrive in time for a viewing, how would the potential buyer tax the car if they were to buy it?

And, is there anything for the buyer to be concerned about, as they wouldn't have the correct piece of V5C to take home with them?

In this scenario, I'm the potential buyer smile

Cheers.

You won’t be able to tax it without a valid new keeper supplement or new Registration document.
I would wait for the new ref document to come through ( around 3 days at the moment) before picking up the car.
The DVLA do seem to give a months grace to tax a new car, so you could pick it up and wait for the seller to forward you the new Keeper supplement or apply for a new Reg document yourself, but I would wait a few days for it to arrive before collecting the car.

The chap applied for a change of reg Wednesday just gone [I believe]. I'm going to view the car on Monday so we're hoping the new V5C will arrive by then.

The car is obviously taxed currently, and will be until he notifies the DLVA the car is sold [if I do end up buying it], so I could probably at least get it home, park it up in the garage, and then wait until he receives the change of reg V5C so I can tax it in my name etc.

Kind of make sense!!

I know someone in the trade who can tax a car without a V5. He charges for his services but I assume it to be only a small sum.

In the good old days you could tax without a V5 at the Post Office. Can't you do this now?

...mind, I wouldn't want to buy a car without the correct tear off of the V5

You can tax a car on the phone with dvla using the vehicles chassis number
As long as the vehicle is mot'd and the chassis number is correct to the Reg dvla will tax it for 6 months this can only be done once without v5
I know as I've recently done it

I could certainly give the DVLA a buzz, if need be, to see if this is an option. Ta.
