I've just had someone offer me 40% of asking price for something I'm selling (it's realistically worth at least 80% I'd say), wasn't interested in haggling up, so just said "sorry, no thanks" and let him go find another one elsewhere.

Out of interest... How did you know the front brakes needed replacing? With regards to tyres, were they outside of the legal limit? Assuming you took a depth gauge with you to confirm this?

It sounds like your offer was taking the piss a bit, you tripled the cost of fixing the things you believed to be knackered. The salesman should've been a professional and kept a professional manner but it sounds like you just took off a random amount for tiny issues on a used car.

My experience of buying from dealers is that there is rarely any movement on the price and they'd rather see you walk than drop a couple of hundred quid. I wouldn't even bother making an offer of £2k lower, I'd expect to be laughed out the door. Private sales are another matter, I usually expect a decent chunk off the asking price.

You made an offer and it was rejected. The fact he called back means there is a deal to be done. The question is whether it is a deal you are willing to get into. If you really, really want/like the car then why not see what room they have on the price ? He may now be keener to drop it far enough to bring it into the window you are happy with and then you get the car you want?

The discs were scored quite badly and were lipped. The pads were really low. There was no way I was buying a car that needed them done. Surely they should have changed them the car went through their approved check ? The tyres had cracking and the front two were bald. The two rears had chunks out of them and one had a nail in it. The alloy wheels were diamond cut but had been corroding and were scuffed all around the edges. £2000 off seemed fair for my time and sorting out the issues which I would have done through them. The service history was missing too so I felt £16k was too much.

The salesman was out of order, not you, unless you've left out the fact that you had a terrible attitude or something silly like that.
You're well within your rights to make an offer, and he's well within his rights to not choose to sell to you.

To be honest, he's well within his rights to throw a paddy too, but that doesn't mean it'll do them any good for their business!

I think you've done the right thing by not dealing with them.

As above though, you've done nothing wrong. You're well within your rights to offer any value you see fit and the dealer is well within their rights to decline. If the conversation did go as above then it is at the very least unprofessional. I suspect there is more to it than 14k offer and he goes "crazy" straight away, though. I suspect this was a tough negotiation between both of you and it got out of hand.

It's often better to review the market and then benchmark your offer to that.

So rather than "offers 2k less as alloys need work......" say I have checked autotrader and there are x cars with exactly the same spec which are cheaper, so I would offer £x,xxx.

As many used cars will have alloys with damage, brakes needing doing or alternative wear and tear. By you demonstrating that they have priced their car wrong, they then cannot argue.

Also you need to read things better, it should always be the buyer walking away, not the dealer asking you to!!

From the salesman point of view, I asked a lot of questions and he had to go back and forth a good few times. I was very polite throughout and treated him with respect (I am not sure if he deserves that).

Bidding £14k on a £16k asking price sounds like a reasonable place to start. Imagine the shoe is on the other foot - negotiating a price for a px. If everyone got upset when the dealer bid low, no deals would ever happen. My last purchase was a S/H motorhome from a big dealer, advertised at 23k. I knew exactly what it was worth to me so offered 20k including new service and timing belt. Let the dealer know that it was my best offer and I was ready to buy there and then. Deal done, deposit paid and everyone happy. At the end of the day, its just a business transaction - some deals work, some don't; no need for anyone to get upset.
