This is my first post so apologies if anything I say is obvious - I’ve tried searching the forums but haven’t quite found what I’m specifically after.

I currently have a 2006 Toyota celica. It’s running pretty well (120k, no massive issues other than the expected wear and tear) and I love it as a fun car. Unfortunately it’s not really practical so I’m looking to get something more practical (read 5 dr) but which still has an element of fun.

I’m looking at the bmw 4 series gran coupe. With my current miles, going petrol makes more sense and ideally I’d like a manual. I’m looking at either a 420i or 440i but have a same concern which most people debating this seem to have which is power. My friend has a pretty much standard A5 which doesn’t really do it for me in terms of power. I haven’t been able to test drive one due to lockdown but I’m guessing the 420i will be similarly underwhelming based on what other people seem to be saying in this forum and others.

So do I
A) get a 420i and get a remap to essentially bring it to 430i power

Or b) suck it up and get a 440 (although I’m struggling to find a manual one)

I should clarify I’m looking at models from 2017-20ish (not a fan of the new range). I also work for a car supermarket so could get the 420 for around 17-18k which would likely be a hefty saving on the 440.

If you’ve made it this far then thanks for reading, any advice would be great

If you can afford the bigger engine it’s a no brainer for me.

We have the '21 M440
Great car, but in the US it is only available in automatic

It has the B58 3.0L inline six cylinder. Great power and still Xdrive so it is good in the snow, would be awesome in the snow If I put winter tires and wheels.
There is plenty of trunk space, very comfortable with great features inside like wireless phone charging and USBC ports for other stuff.
It has only been a month but it is great on gas....that is if you can keep your foot from going to the floor...which is fun also.

Yes, that is a corvette in the background. The local BMW dealer took it in on trade. rofl The previous owners traded it and another car to upgrade to a 4 series.

Hope this helps you a little
Cheers

The 440 engine is excellent. I had the 340i touring and you will be pleased you paid the extra. The gearbox is excellent on these cars and you will struggle to find manual one as they aren't great in the desirability stakes and are hard to sell on. It will cost you much more to own a manual one in the holding cost of owning it.

Any reason why you wont have an auto?

I would go and drive a 340i or 440i auto and then find what you want. Its a great car and the auto box makes it.

Ah yeah, did some Googling since posting this thread and I didn’t realise they went all manual with the 440 a few years back. To be honest it’s purely because I’ve always owned manual (I’m based in the UK) and I just prefer having that added element of control. That being said, if the paddle shift option works well on the automatic then that would be fine if the alternative is a manual 420 based on the responses so far

Has to be the B58, even if you do have to go auto. It's an astonishing engine.

I have a 240i with the B58 engine and a manual gearbox. Not sure if it's available with manual in the 4 series. Either way I would definately say go for the 440i.

I think if you went for the 420i with or without a remap you would end up regretting not getting the 440. It's worth the extra money for the engine.

The 440i Gran Coupé was only ever made with an auto box. The two door 440i Coupé was available with a manual but there aren't many around.

The 440i makes a wonderful noise - makes the M3/M4 sound like a tractor IMO. I'm currently contemplating a 420i but if I could afford the extra cost of the 440i I'd go for it without giving it a second thought.

I have a 420 coupe and under most situations the power is adequate, the plan is to remap it when the warranty runs out.
It depends if you want or need all the power for me I wanted something nearly new and pristine and a more powerful engine model would have been more than I wanted to pay so I will go down the remap route for now.......

440i every single time. Amazing engine, and gave me better fuel economy than my current b48 engined car.

That's the thing.

People go for the smaller engined petrols, fearing the economy of the 3 litre straight 6, but the bigger engine is so under stressed at motorway speeds it actually returns better mpg.

If you want a 4 series for best possible economy then get one of the diesels. In any other case I'd get the 440i.

My 440i averages a true 29.8mpg. The car isn’t driven particularly lightly and that’s with around 70% town / 30% motorway use in a mixture of Comfort & Sport. I never use Eco Pro.

Pretty astonishing IMO.

For reference - my previous Alfa (from new) only returned an average of 26.5mpg. 2 litre, 4 cylinder with 280bhp. Same usage.

Looks like we had the same cars smile

My veloce was scensoredt on fuel too. Same with my current m135i - highly strained 2.0Ts seem to have a drinking problem no matter how you baby them.

My 440i is for sale but it's 2 door so probably not for you

Get the bigger engine. Its so good on mpg its supernatural, and you wouldn't want the notchy non existent manual anyways. Zf8 auto with paddles is brilliant.

What about the 428i?

Available in manual with 245 bhp so not slow.

Personally I would go for the 440i. Gearbox is meant to be very good for an auto. Neighbour has a 440i convertible and it sounds fantastic on start up.

Yeah sadly the 5dr is going to be the way forward, going to need those back doors to get the dog in.

And cheers for all the responses above, looks like the 440 is the way forward so I’ll start hunting around for some deals

Not to away you, but I have a lab who jumps in the back easily, just move the passenger seat forwards. Got a full size car seat in as well for my boy. Obviously the gran coupe hatch boot is better for other stuff though
