Having two cars is definitely a luxury, but it needn’t be implausible if it opens up two cheaper cars. I had a V70 alongside my 130i for two months and it made me £227 including all running costs/road tax/insurance over that time...I did get a massively underpriced V70, but still, it can be done.

I know what you mean about the Celica. You could get a Toyota Corolla T-Sport with the same engine...on paper it does exactly the same as a Civic Type R...

I used to have an LCI 130i and have since had two pre-LCIs. The steering in the LCI is far better than many systems, including the EP3 Type R - well weighted and precise. The main difference you’d notice is that it’s far lighter when manoeuvring than the hydraulic system. I think my two pre-LCIs revved harder than the LCI, which in contrast felt a bit smoother at low revs, but I’m not sure how typical that is.

The Celica is a great car, I drove one, a great laugh, no torque at all, but really great fun to spank, 8200 red line, and it had genuine sports car handling. Looking back, these days, I'd be tempted to go for one over a Civic Type-R.

Thought why not revive this thread since it has turned into a bit of a saga but went for a E82 125i in the end after mulling over so many different cars. Was pretty set on the N52 powered 1 series but fell for the coupes looks over the hatch. It did take some time to find something in decent condition and car prices are really climbing at the moment.

Was a nice Water blue one which seems to be an unusual colour. The market had loads of black ones i found but is still a rare car.

Very nearly decided to push budget and go for a z4 coupe but would have been right at bottom end of market. Hopefully i stick with my decision this time!

Nice choice - they can sound really nice with a performance exhaust on

E46 330 performance and feel a bit more nimble to me as lighter - plus you can wake them up to 130i levels of go too

I would say go for the 1-series...125i could be a coupe or a convertible, or 130i hatch...or slightly different 123d (hatch, coupe, or conv) they are pretty quick
Just find a nice example, keep a few ££ to one side just in case anything major needs doing, and enjoy...
there's no substitute for rwd, and a good engine is a must, and you only live once (and a 1-series isn't going to bankrupt you)

That exhaust sounds amazing! Supposedly very rare now!
