Commuter car 800mile round trip

S Budget is around 17k, so not outwith touching distance.

I'll have a look at Volvo's on the back of this, no one has mentioned the Jag XJ, any thoughts ? (again usually up around 17k mark)

With that criteria I think the best bang for buck looking at a good all-rounder for the commute I found a A6 Ultra S tronic for around 15-16k.

Nice place to sit, enough gadgets and should easily cover that distance with good comfort and its only £30 road tax

Volvo or an S class would be my pick. Both superb in comfort for the motorway. Have owned both & still have the Volvo.

I’ve just got rid of a 68 reg A6, it was a great cruiser, easily managed 60+ mpg on the motorway. I regularly did 250 miles a day in it, sometimes 400+, it was very comfortable but had many electrical gremlins. If you can find a good one it would do the job.

I swapped it for a Q5, it’s nowhere near as comfortable or refined.

I've not found seats better for me than the Volvo - I think that's where my money would go.

I currently own a Volvo and I agree the seats are brilliant, the Saab I had before had even better seats though. Shame they have gone bust and no longer fit the OP's 2015 criteria.

Splitting the balance between longer where base (for comfort), safety, space, relaxation, comfort, economy, and resale, you’ll be hard pushed to beat an E200 or E220. A base spec will have smaller wheels (larger profile tyres) more comfortable. All weathers will see you thro the winter at nominal cost on economy. It will eat the miles. A good Indy or even Merc service plan will mean reasonable service costs, too.
