Hi All,

Am new here.

About to pick up a new 118i and am debating whether I should buy a Service Plan from the dealer (Stephen James). Looking at the BMW website it looks like it will cost me £20 per month for 3 years until the Value service pack kicks in (I could be wrong here!)

I have no idea what the service intervals are for car and what I get for my service and when - very confusing. If its relevant I'll probably be doing 7k miles per annum. The car will be mine and not on PCP.

Are these worth buying?

Many thanks

Raj

Ok so if you look on the BMW Service Website and pop in a random 20 plate 118i, it looks like its the standard 18k or 2 years whichever comes first.

https://www.bmw.co.uk/en/topics/owners/service-wor...

Therefore if the car is brand new, you are going to need the following done in the first 4 years:

Minor Service (Oil and Microfilter) - 18k or 2 years
Brake Fluid - 3 Years
Major Service (Oil, Microfilter, Air Filter, Plugs etc) - 48k or 4 years

If you are only doing 7k a year, you are going to be hitting the yearly intervals rather than the mileage therefore only the minor service and brake fluid will be due within the first 3 years of ownership.

You need to confirm if the service plan includes the major service as this is the key question in terms of whether its worth bothering with.

If it does not, it looks like the following prices are for paying on the day at Stephen James in Ruxley:

Minor service - £333.52
Brake Fluid - £209.68
Total - £543.20

At £20pm over 3 years you are paying £720 so the costs do not add up unless the 4 year 36k major service is also included.

If the major is included (£592.47 on the day) then £720 over 3 years payment is worth it as the above three items total £1135.67 on their own so its a substantial saving BUT if its a 3 year PCP and you are going to give the car back, the major service is not due until 48 months based on your mileage so you would be giving the car back before its due and therefore would save money by not buying the service plan and just paying for the minor and brake fluid when due

On another note.....£209.68 for a brake fluid change seems excessive. Both our F30 330D and F36 430D are only £73 for brake fluid so perhaps the latest series BMW's have something different about their fluid changes??

If this is the EMAC service pack it does include the 4 years service, plus MOTs (2), yearly map updates and quarterly 'health checks' (possible of dubious value to be honest!).

I have one on my 240 and it should save me at least £500.

Ask the dealer to give you a list of what is included - my dealer then annotated that with what each item would cost individually to illustrate the savings.

Spoke to the dealer and he asked what my mileage would be. Steered me away from the Service Plan which was fair enough.

I’m amazed by those prices for the 3 cyl 1 series - my M140i goes to a London main dealer and they are charging significantly less “on the day” prices! Would love to see the cost breakdown.

Yeah I was surprised at the prices, must be more expensive for the newer models. Our Fxx 3 and 4 series are go into Stephen James and are cheaper.

The first fluid change on the M2 was only due at 3 years so fell within the value servicing at £60. £210 is outrageous even if it is at 2 years. I would use an indy who can update the idrive for that job.

First brake fluid change is after 3 years, then every subsequent two years.
At 3 years, my 335d was
MOT £54.85
Service (standard scope) £24.86
Brake fluid change £59.82 ( £49.72 labour and £10.10 fluid)
(Excluding VAT)

Added
Services so far.
At 18months and 20890 miles, first (and oil) service = £285.34
At 36months and 35488 miles, MOT, service scope and brake fluid = £156.47
At 42months and 38505 miles, full service, with oil change (and including anti-virus air con treatment at £20) = £454.76

So for my 335d that was £285.34 if you exclude the MOT at 36 months, otherwise the full 36 month cost was £441.81 cash paid - not on a plan (equivalent to £12.27 a month)

Check as the F40 M135i first brake fluid service is after 2 years now and been quoted £81.64. Not sure who quoted £200 but that's crazy.

Those prices can't be correct.

I was also told that the service plan builds up so if you change to another BMW the plan can be moved over to the new car
