Not quite an SUV, but a post 2012 Volvo XC70 D5 in SE Lux form is a very nice place to be. D5 engine is very reliable and has lots of poke and SE Lux trim provides plenty of toys.

I’ve had 2 and loved both of them.
I would agree with this or a late Series 1 XC90. I know you said you cant get excited about them but drive one. They are amazingly comfortable and accomplished family cars; they didn't sell so well for so long by accident

A Lexus 450h is s pretty comfortable place to be, with low road noise, very quiet inside, reversing camera, and reliable.
Yup, the RX-450h would be my option, in SE-L spec.

If you're looking for an X5 sized car then the FX really is the pick or if Q5 size will do then the EX/QX50 are the pick, also both are ULEZ/Caz compliant & are easily as nice inside/well made as any German at this price point.

S Premium is the top spec but pretty much all come pretty loaded heated/air cooled seats/sunroof adaptive cruise:

Jeep - amazing value for money.
Until they break, then parts need to come from the US or Italy.

I'd go Range Rover or possibly a Freelander
Worried about a Jeep breaking and you'd go for a Land Rover product? Interesting/

I had a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee last year, as I fancied a big SUV for camping and driving long distances in the UK over last summer holiday. Yes great value for money, loads of accessories and tech on the Summit variant, looked great too. But I wasn't too bothered about the elevated road position, I couldn't get comfortable in it on long journeys, the 3.0l diesel engine sounded like a tractor, trim inside and out was flimsy, the tank swallowed 95 litres of diesel and yet the boot was smaller than my A6 avant.

6 months of lairing around in it, made the decision to go back to an Audi I'm afraid.

Depends if you find waiting 5 months for a part to come from Italy (via USA) acceptable, let alone the £1200 bill for the two castings when all it needed was two rubber bushes.

I’ve a VW Touareg R on order that will be 14/16 months delivery - ordered last June.
After having a L322 Autobiography 2012 I’ll never have a LR product again. That 4.4 diesel was horrific around town - like a taxi. I’ve also had a 2012 FX50 Infinity that was so stiff I checked it had suspension. Quietest V8 ever. My fave cheap SUV was a 2007 4.8 Cayenne with air suspension.
Now I have a 15 year old 40k miles Hemi 5.7 Jeep that’s just so simple and honest I love it.
Probably back in a Cayenne one day

Not bad but probably doesn't meet most people's definition of nice in this context.

In the theme of recommending cars you've owned I'd suggest the Touareg. Smaller than the Range Rover if that's being ruled out as too big.

You'd get a 2014ish V6 for that money or if you can find one a 2011/12 V8, which I've owned and was a great car. The V8's tend to be very well specced.

You could go really mad and get the first generation V10 in R50 form. You probably wouldn't lose much in depreciation, running costs on the other hand laugh

Criteria
SUV, big boot, auto, reverse camera is desirable but at least senors, privacy glass, sat nav and a reasonable nice place to be. Low road noise etc. Not horrendous running costs.

Budget is up to 12k, ideally cheaper, but can also spend a little more.

Last of the line freelander 2 HSE. And I really mean last of the line, as the interior had a radical refresh that in essence was all RR/Discovery rather than the much lower quality interiors previously.

I had one for 3 years (bought at 3 years old) and loved it, like driving a luxury armchair. Never let me down, although headlamp bulbs regularly went (but could change them in less than 2 minutes).

But at least neither of those cars is likely to go wrong in a very expensive way and turn into <Scotty Kilmer>an endless money pit</Scotty Kilmer>

I had a freelander 2 SD4 dynamic. LOVED that car. Apart from the aforementioned headlight bulbs (due to the dipped/main beam being controlled by a shutter which clips the bulbs eventually) nothing at all went wrong. Sold it due to the upcoming Bristol ULEZ. Was gutted.

I really like that Cayenne.

Makes a strong argument for my next car, I wonder how reliable the panoramic roof is for not leaking though
