The dealer is not allowed to charge any surcharge for using a credit card - many just won’t allow it and will take bank transfer only for larger amounts.
I didn't know that. Maybe their purchase agreement needs updating as it clearly states a 2% credit card surcharge.
I think I'd be inclined to pay it, but only by credit card, and only if they agree that there'll be no surcharge for doing so.

I can undertstand that a salesman would want to hit his monthly target, and would tell him that equally I don't have the money until the beginning of the next month, hence the need to pay by credit card.

You are covered if, you pay over £100 on a credit card for the full value of the goods up to £30,000. So, pay £200 on a credit card then transfer the balance. If they go under between that payment and collection the credit card company are liable for your total loss where less than £30k. Google moneyhelper section 75! Same if there is a problem - I rejected a new car due to paint damage via this route, well threatened to and then the dealer arranged a replacement car!

Provided there was no loss of a months tax I'd be fine paying and them registering and taxing as long as something over £100 is on a card!

Definitely this. I paid the deposit for my car on my credit card for this reason, the rest via BT on collection.

I think a sweetener should be in the deal somewhere.

I also think it's safe to say that if you said nothing you'd be a month down on the tax.

A couple of other things annoyed me over the weekend including the salesman's lack of compliance with some of the most basic FCA requirements. I was happy to ignore it initially because I was getting such a good deal on the car but it grated on me over the rest of the weekend & today, so I rang the other dealer up at lunchtime & did a deal on that car. It's a little more expensive as it has some extras however he was miles less painful to deal with than the first guy. Email to cancel original deal now sent & it's forgotten about already as far as I'm concerned. First dealership's sales contract was years out of date & their guy needs an FCA refresher course.

Best of luck with the new dealer and hope that collection is enjoyable.

Wasn't bothered by the lack of FCA compliance as I was comfortable with what I was signing up for, but from a salesman at a main dealer it was very surprising. Over the weekend I just thought that if they couldn't be bothered with that, then would they bother PDI'ing it properly & would they bother setting a firm delivery date or mess me about after I'd made travel arrangements. IME if a business is lacking in one area then it's also a wider issue throughout business and I don't deal with those types of fly, take short-cuts businesses. He threw away a sale for the sake of a 10 min compliance phone call..... after already stating that he needed the sale to hit target.

New dealer is much more professional.

What you say is generally correct but there is a point to note which is important.
You do not need to pay £100 or more on your credit card to have full section 75 cover.
The critical point is that the full purchase price must be over £100 then you can make any part payment at all by credit card, which could if you wanted be as little as 1p.
Look it up, its true. smile

Congrats on getting a good deal with somewhere else that you are happy with smile

The bit I picked up on was that he told you that the car wouldn't arrive until April possibly the middle of.

So you bought on that timeline and it's not your problem that the car turned up early.

Anyway, not a problem now smile

What part of the FCA requirement was a concern?

The dealer has dropped the ball here really. The Salesman should've run up and offered an incentive to close the deal within their timescales, some freebies, tank of fuel etc. Daft of the salesman to expect the customer to just change their plans and timescales just to hit a target..
