That's so minty fresh. Stuff new cars, get that properly protected from the elements and put it to work.

Wonder what it's worth.
Prime candidate for that lanolin underbody spray gubbins...I've only seen it on instagram, is it any good?

South West rustproofing (PH did a story on them a few years ago) use Dinitrol. They did one of my cars a few years ago and it still looks and feels good underneath.

TBH I think the most important factor is the preparation. Slather the best rust treatment in the world over salty rusty metal and it's not going to work as well as anything applied properly to steam-cleaned good metal with a modicum of disassembly to get it where it needs to be.

I've heard that it washes off the worst affected areas fairly quickly so unless you want to do it every year then there are better options.

Interesting, I wouldn't mind having the SL done at some point.

W221 S500L with fewer than six thousand miles -- auction format and current sitting at a scarcely believable £10,500:

Now up to £15,250 with five hours remaining!
Good grief... £20,000 final bid!

Over budget but as said several times, almost impossible to get more modern pound per prestige BHP:

I picked this up recently for similar amount.
Seems like tremendous value albeit I’m probably going to get the timing chains done anyway.

Admittedly i’m not a fan of black on black on black with extra black. But beggars cant be choosers…
And I think it (possibly) suits the sinister nature of the car

Congratulations FH. Those wheels are just a refurb away from a decent colour smile

That's incredible VFM for outrageous power.

I'd have to say that I agree on the wheels though.

Thanks, the wheels would certainly look better in silver and ideally would be the first thing to do.

But my initial concern is timing chain/tensioner replacement as it hasn t been done and this is probably the main reason keeping values low. Its a £4-5k job.

Fortunately its had a £3k supercharger re-build already, water pump replaced (but coolant Y pipe needs doing).

The car has spent most of its life in the South East and fortunately no mention of corrosion on the MOT history (a quick look under suggests its not as bad as many others.

I m under no disillusion that this could end up being a moneypit especially as i m not handy with tools, but having come out of a C63 earlier in the year, this is a fraction of the value with similar performance.

Not had a chance to extend its legs but the engine sounds and feels monumental even compared to the 4.0 tt C63

That's amazing. Other than the black alloys, but I see how it suits the moodiness of the car. But no.

Do the chains rattle? I'm told you can check if they need doing by looking at the advance on the VVTs Less than 5% is fine. Not sure? Do they fail catastrophically? TDC (U-Tube) had two XFR both with failed chains fixed after failure not before without issue. Wraptor (U-Tube) do lots of mods and chain fixes and have good info. on likely issues. Again they state rarely fail without warning noises and only badly if not dealt with when first warnings arrive.

I d not worry about chains. 6k oil changes and drive it.

I m sure it happens, but in my experience timing chains give plenty of warning before letting go. First cold start rattle take it to get it done, but it may well never happen.

The early cars had aluminium crossover pipes, check for that before worrying about changing them.

FYI many of them have a deep bottom end sounding knock sound on hot restarts that sounds awful. It’s the high pressure fuel system and will go with a few revs and passes quickly. Think it scares a lot of people, it sounds AWFUL.

Surely you can the chain sorted for a chunk less than 4 or 5 large?

Just to prove that there are barges that fall within the budget constraints of the thread, here is an entirely brilliant E65 for £2000. Granted, it drinks from the devil's pump, but it is an insane amount of car for very little outlay.

It's over on the Beige car forum which ends up being redacted every time you type its name. 6 months MOT.

Great advice and agree on all counts. The fuel system sound is absolutely dreadful! It's probably something they could have fitted a small accumulator to stop, but couldn't afford.

Parts are reasonable but it's a lot of work getting it done. At £75 an hour or whatever they charge these days it's a big one.

Not for a man of your calibre wink

Isn't it something like over a day's labour for most garages? TDC made a challenge to an indy to see if they could fix it in 24 hours and they only just did it, and that was an indy that had done it numerous times.... So book may be as much as 30 hours...?? Many decent indys these days are £100/hr+!
