Gorgeous but 200m since being put away 15y ago, you d want some solid evidence of recommissioning. Granted it s basically new but at the very least it needs a new set of boots.

On a motorway run, I bet that wouldn't be too bad on fuel at all. Probably in the 30s?
The problem is the 4 speed box which runs high revs. They take off in 2nd unless provoked effectively rendering them a 3 speed.

I ran a 280e with the same box and that was its achiles heel.
Would do me fine. Slow and steady wins the race these days.
I think that's the way to approach them, sit at 60 on a long journey and it would be pleasant enough.
I'd bet its fine sitting at 80 all day truth be told. But yes, I'm more of a 60/65 watch the world go by driver these days...
I'm a bit of both. I'm happy to plod at 60-65mph if I'm in no hurry, yet on a long drive if I just want to get it done, or I fancy going faster I'm more than happy to go faster too.

It'll be perfectly happy at 90 for hours. My 300TE did that on a Euro trip with no complaints. it was doing about 27mpg IIRC.

A V12 Jaguar with the 3 speed box will sit at 3,000 RPM to do 80MPH, which feels ridiculous these days but it did ensure that you were right in the power band on the motorway. It probably didn't help economy much!

Could be a nice-one to drive immediately to the nearest wheel-refurbers.

That's a good find and it has (recently serviced) ABC, too.

Oh it would happily do it, just a bit revvy.

Never seen rusty wing mirror glass before.

Seems they serviced it the way they specced it. Stingily.

Regarding the W126, you can save an awful lot of money if you don't mind a slight deficit of alloy wheels and cylinders.

This is a bit of perfection.
Almost perfect mot history as well. If i had a job that involved lots of frequent motorway trips (and I could afford the fuel and insurance and get decent car allowance from work and therefore ditch the tesla), I'd be all over that and daily it as Mercedes intended.
But I don't, so I won't. Wish I did though....

LOL. That's what I hoped. Best I ever saw was 26mpg, but average was 22mpg over nearly 20k miles. The six cylinder is lower geared compared to the V8, to make up for less torque, so while it felt nippy and responsive to drive in town or A-roads, it was a bit busy at a motorway cruise. Brilliant car however, much preferred to the S124 I had briefly.

ETA: Looking again at that graph of MPG readings, I suspect the one off 26mpg might have been a data entry error! I do recall that it was fairly consistent no matter how it was driven.

Just about sneaks in to £430/yr tax, too. That with silver wheels would be lovely, as a near-classic.

That seems quite optimistic for a 126. I don't think my E46 325i would get that, and I think the Boxster GTS 4.0 (which does about 2900rpm at 90mph) might just about do that.

The 300SE was fine cruising at speed, but not economical.

I once did 1000km in a day from Hook of Holland to the top of Denmark in the 9000 Aero and averaged 85mph for the trip at 32mpg. Decent stints of 120mph cruise across Germany. Was pretty impressed with that speed/economy combo.
