Remove the blacked out windows and I think it's OK. Drivetrain in a standard saloon would be fabulous.

Happy Friday losers.

Have another S124, this time with an M119 5.0. €66,000

I usually prefer estates rather than saloons. I know it is not the thread manner, but I think that the Mercedes C class estate is probably the ideal compromise in a car.
The blacked out windows would help when sleeping in the rear, because I would need to sell my home if I wanted to buy the car.

That's not a C Class smile

I also always buy estates these days.
So much more flexibility and space for multiple dogs.
The other benefit is not getting a warm wet ear when you are least expecting it. hehe

Someone has tried to modernise that one and it now looks about a miliion times less good than the perpetually for sale one

It'd be a nice project to turn it back into something cool.

I see it's parked in the reserved Mercedes parking right outside my local primary school.

It's good to see that you are awake, Ross.
My comment was about my personal preference, not about the vehicle on offer.
I know, that thread preference would be for MB to have offered an S class estate in the 1980's - So that they would now fall into the sub £5k price band
The only W124 I have driven was a 1995 E280 and, whilst great on the by-passes in Sussex, it felt just a little large on some of the local country lanes.
My preference for a C class was demonstrated by driving one up to Snowdonia and back one day.

I loved my 800 coupe, a Vitesse Turbo, but it had the mechanical build and durability of a mediocre 80s car. Handsome devil though.

On the standard suspension setup (which this Sterling would have left the factory with) 800s were really very poor to drive, managing to combine wallowy handling with a crashy and wooden ride, but with the revised Vitesse Sport setup was an incredible revelation and managed to both ride and handle miles better. If I picked up any 800 I'd look to change the springs, dampers, and ARBs to that spec.

I always found it hilarious that the RRP of the original 2.7 cars back in 1992 put it up against a 4.0 XJS coupe, although by the end even list was the same as the hatch/saloon and in reality they were selling them with gargantuan discounts. All the same by a few years old they were worth a couple of grand at most, so they were a good choice for the young bargeman about town on a very tight budget.

Fond memories of that car now I'm not dependent on it for transport.

What a refreshingly clear and comprehensive advert, and another vote for using a ‘normal’ trusted garage not exclusively specialists.
”have owned several Phaetons and have been through all five engine variants.”
He deserves an award for persistence for that alone.
The potential bork levels would keep me awake, but I’ve often wondered if the 3.2 V6 would be up to the job, or the later 3.6 according to Lord Wiki.

Lovely in a roguish way but agree it needs un-dealering and chrome, the grille is particularly irksome.
And those seats have had more than 85000 miles of farts in them.

A bit leggy but a very nice spec with the excellent straight six diesel.

Are you brave enough?

This would make an excellent daily in comfortable slipper spec rather than the usual M sport shenanigans.

Ford Fairlane for just over thread. Never heard of these before, are they similar to the big US Fords of the time? https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C2001942

I like that. A lot. They don't have some interesting stuff for sale at that place!

They really do know how to spec a car over there.

My desire level for a UK spec E Class with black vinyl seats, silver plastic trim, the engine from a van, and the button blanks only outnumbered by the endless naff AMG badges on everything = absolutely zero.

For that? 9 out of 10.

What a difference colour and spec choice make, that looks every inch an expensive luxury car.
