Not entirely sure if this is big enough for this thread, but picked this up a couple of weeks ago for my lad for his first motor. He's got good taste.

Small engine, 318Ci, but drives so well for a 26 year old thing, second owner had it 25 years.

Nice. I have an E46 325i as my runaround, they are such good cars.

17 next January, will give us some time to get any niggles sorted.

Did spot a CL500 on AT while I was browsing for the same £s as this, thought that was a bit brave.

That's a fantastic first car, one he'll remember.

My daughter is learning to drive in a little Mini R56 convertible I picked up for the job but is very keen to start driving interesting cars as soon as she's passed so I'm keeping half an eye out for insureable but interesting cars ready.

What makes you think that the words "interesting" and "insurable" belong in the same sentence where the under 21s are concerned? getmecoat

My last experience of this was about 10 years ago when I discovered that a manual Volvo C70 T5 convertible was incredibly cheap for a 21 year old to insure (cheaper than the Mercedes A140 she'd just totalled) so I was hoping there might still be the odd cheat code car like that hehe

The e46 is half the premium of a Corsa/Fiesta etc. I guess the algorithms don’t see kids driving them so no high risk attached. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My 20 year old nephew has just got a 3.0 Z4 which he insured a lot cheaper than his previous 320d.

What are people's thoughts and experiences on the X350/356/358 gen Jaguar XJ? I'm looking at them around the £10k mark in an attempt to get my dad to buy one. He lives in deepest darkest Cornwall and has has a Fiat 500 for years, which is find for journeys in the local area but not good at all for the 3 hour drive to see me so he gets the train or uses a hire car. He did have in mind to get a Bentley Continental GT but has gone off the idea partly on the grounds of the poor fuel economy. Granted an XJ wouldn't be great on that front either, but it would be a bit more reasonable. I know you can get the newer XJ around the same price, but he likes the look of the X350. Something like this: https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C2017178

Also how easy it it to remove the leaper and restore the bonnet, as loads seem to have them.

I know from experience that these guys are really decent with a pragmatic approach to old smoker Jaguars. This is a bit leggy but they can take the miles.

That's surprising. What do you think that the insurance will be for that? Is it too old to have a black box?

I enjoy a manual, but rowing your own gears in a C6 does not appeal.

That looks great and very sensibly priced. MOT history is generally good as well.

Premiums for the e46 for a 17 year old just over £1k, no black box. Paid more for my daughter’s Citigo, madness.

Paid more nearly 30 years ago on a Fiesta.

We were the same, daughters first car was a mk4 Golf TDi 'match' SE, think this was top of range other than gti and her insurance was much cheaper than the usual suspects.

Really interesting.

My grandson is 17 and 7/12ths and will be taking his test soon.
He is working full time as an apprectice commercial plumber/welder and once he has passed his test he will need a car to get to site and lug stuff around.
We had been thinking as small and cheap as possible, but it would seem we could do a lot better for less.

Is it just a case of endless quotes online, or would you feel this is the right time to use a broker?

IME experience it's cheaper before they pass. One daughter at 18 was £1500 ish in an A160 Merc, another daughter was more at 17 with a 306 diesel but both dropped to @ £500 to £600 after a year or two.

Both are with Hastings now.
