Not entirely sure if this is big enough for this thread, but picked this up a couple of weeks ago for my lad for his first motor. He's got good taste.

Small engine, 318Ci, but drives so well for a 26 year old thing, second owner had it 25 years.

Great choice for first car, very tidy looking example.

Really interesting.

My grandson is 17 and 7/12ths and will be taking his test soon.
He is working full time as an apprectice commercial plumber/welder and once he has passed his test he will need a car to get to site and lug stuff around.
We had been thinking as small and cheap as possible, but it would seem we could do a lot better for less.

Is it just a case of endless quotes online, or would you feel this is the right time to use a broker?
Run a few quotes through comparison sites on various models of interest, put in a fake DOB or whatever you need to do to show as a new driver (not provisional) go left field and you might be surprised.
All depends of course on what said young person wants to be seen in.
I do feel I've possibly de-railed this thread slightly, but happy to share the info if it's of benefit to some!

Think not of derailing but succession planning, and very much in the proper spirit. thumbup

That's surprising. What do you think that the insurance will be for that? Is it too old to have a black box?
Premiums for the e46 for a 17 year old just over £1k, no black box. Paid more for my daughter s Citigo, madness.
That's very interesting. Is the E46 in any flavour ULEZ compliant?

I think all of the petrol ones post March '01 are compliant and for those prior to that you may be able to get a CoC.

Some of the diesels (2002 330ds I think) even show-up as ULEZ despite the fact they definitely don't meet the standard.

That sounds about right. My 2002 325ti Compact was.

It had the emissions listed on the V5 for CO, HC and NOx so that might be worth looking at for anyone buying one.

Not a barge but a lovely looking thing. There's one along my road. I think the father has passed it onto his son. It was parked up for ages, while it's still going it's taken the toll on it's appearance and keeping it going. I think from their mobile mechanic it may've failed to proceed while on a long journey.

Just an observation, it seems it's had a bit of paint before the OSR arch. Possible corrosion repair or possibly scrape. I'd happily drive that and have it parked outside.

My 20 year old nephew has just got a 3.0 Z4 which he insured a lot cheaper than his previous 320d.
Excellent! Much better than the snotters I thought were cool at that age.

Regarding the apprentice plumber/welder Volvo C30/V40? Focus underneath. It seems the later DV6 HDi with the injectors on the back may be a good engine. A friend has a Ford Fusion with the DV6 with the injectors on the front and if there's been turbo killing oil contamination nightmares with it they've not told me.

Rear arches are very much a passage of rites with E46s! Mine had had one repaired and another is being done.

ABC, megatax, headbolts, empeegees. Can imagine parts might be difficult to get hold of? Still tempting in that hue, nevertheless.

That price to get into an AMG Mercedes with the 6.3 definitely seems attractive.

Here's a couple entries from this weekend's Anglia auction I like:

No reserve Bentley, looks nice in white https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/auctions/2752-11-A...

Happy Friday winners !
This French barge has just hit Retrosh*te, not strictly for sale obvs but ‘available’.

I have just witnessed a red XF V8 giving it the absolute beans for an overtake, very thread. Personally I wouldn’t knowing there is a crossroads a few hundred yards later…

And on the white Daimler at ACA I’m afraid not to my tastes.

Happy Friday, losers.

I have a maintenance question about my distinctly non Friday budget barge.

To wit; does anyone know with certainty what size the front brake discs on a '97 X300 sovereign should be? the usual parts suppliers all suggest that the front diameter should be 291 mm, but the rears are 305 mm.

Is that right? My initial reaction is that can't be correct; front brakes are always larger than rear brakes, but now I am wondering if it's a quirk of the XJ rear suspension system that means they have to have unusually large rear brake to fit around the presumably rather overbuilt hub carrier?

Not answering your question, but observing that on my V8 TVR the disks were 260 front and 273 rear from the factory
