Any of the coolant system components unfortunately. They re made of chocolate.

It had a radiator and thermostat housing back in 2020, only a few thousand miles ago

Indeed. It may need a little recommissioning before being pressed into service but nothing on the coolant system is scary expensive.

My father had the saloon version for many, many years. We had some great pan-European trips in it when I were a lad.

Eta same colours - gold with brown Tex.

Hmm, my experience of 3 head gasket failures would suggest otherwise. 525i, 530i, 540i. You'd think I would have learnt. They were cheap to buy and people always thought they could fix them for nothing so the loss was never abysmal. They were wrong.

The 6 cylinders weren’t know for head gasket issues, only if the block had been overheated extensively. If it holds temperature at 12’ O Clock it likely is fine. I had a few E39s back in the day, I had to replace the entire cooling system on all of them. If I recall it was around £700 to do so.

I think at least a partial cooling system refresh is good practise on any 10+ year old car you care about really, it’s usually all accessible and DIYable too.

I would be checking those carbon ceramic brake discs VERY carefully. I wouldn't even like to imagine the cost of specific Brembo carbon ceramics for such a low volume car. While they might use them in other applications, the price will be eye watering.

Switch to steels? Even an option??

Then it loses its F1 specialness

I think I'd be tempted to take the carbon discs off and save them for "best" (e.g. exhibiting the car) with steelies for everyday use. If nothing else, aren't carbon ceramics useless when cold?

Exactly. It's one of the few "must do" jobs with any V8 Lexus; replace the rad and water pump. Given their legendary reliability, if you need to do it on a Lexus it's worth considering on other cars.
