I think the front suspension uprights cracking is the only biggie on an earlier L405 and it might never happen. I think there are reinforcement bodges additions on the aftermarket appearing.

I'd definitely consider a 5.0 L405 were I buying again and I ddn't have mine up my arse. If it can really achieve 28-ish MPG on a run that's good enough for me.

My much lighter X351 with the 5.0 SC has a lifetime average of 21mpg but CAN do a 28mpg tank if all I do is sit on the motorway at the speed limit. I gather the ZF8 cars can get another 1-2mpg.

I would expect 20mpg ish average from an L405, half that if you're in the city, and you might get the odd 28mpg tank as an outlier.

All actual figures not optimistic on board computer figures.

My L322 4.4 TDV8 gets around 21-23 mpg on short journeys around town.
The best mpg I have had on a motorway journey is 36 mpg, but more usually 33 mpg.
Do bear in mind driving style - I do tend to do my motorway journeys, which are generally away from big conurbations and at a constant and legal speed.

I do not want to temp any ill-fate on my own L405 but having procrastinated on getting a FFRR for at least 5 years, in that time my view became the L322 fell into either of two camps; old thread budget examples with likely corrosion issues and catch up maintenance required, or massively overpriced examples trading on Metcalfe/Clarkson/HRH halo effect that may be superficially ‘nicer’ but likely to still need good money spending.

By the point I actually bought one the L405 became a much more appealing proposition.

If I were looking to take the plunge I’d still advocate for a 5.0 L322, especially if nice colours/condition, but generally steer towards the L405 all things being equal.

This is spot on. What I found very odd is that I see a lot of 5.0 L322s at more money than the equivalent L405. Go figure? They are certainly banking on the whole 'Modern classic' vibe for sure. And if you want a green one....well, be prepared to pay stupid money

Rover and Dacia!

Rover Man was a very special chap. And many of them who are still thankfully with us are absolutely loving their Dusters.
I hadn't thought of that, I bet selling Dacias isn't fun at all. Every time I've sold a Volvo it ended up feeling like I was running the auditions for Rain Man or Milton from Office Space.

They're the sort of buyers who will call you two months after purchase wanting money back because they found an old petrol receipt from 2013 in the spare wheel well and it was for 95 RON and a car like this V70 T5 Ocean Race Geartronic really needs to have always been run on at least 97 RON and you told me it was well cared for....

Yep, I found exactly the same. Was recently looking at L322s and wanted a petrol one for a change. They are very silly money, and a decent early L405 is not far in price.

Quite different vehicles and many argue the L322 ride is better, but I think a partially knackered L322 is never going to be a better proposition than a L405.

FFRRs seem to suffer from a syndrome of "you either get a good one or a bad one" - to that end, try to find one that has had low owners with long ownership stints. This is especially true of the L405. Surprisingly easy to achieve, quite a few petrol L405s were bought around launch and kept by moneyed families as they are hard to replace.

0a that looks a fine thing. clear glass and silver wheels really do make all the difference.

On that note, what is thread's verdict on the best L322 TDV8 for the discerning bargiste?

As I understand it;
- 3.6 are cheaper to buy and are still great things to drive, but it is a case of 'when, not if' for turbo failure, and replacement is something like £3000
- 4.4 are both more powerful and more efficient, have the lauded ZF8 gearbox and still look relatively modern inside and don't tend to have turbo failure problems, but this is reflected in asking prices, but I think I read that the active dampers are very expensive and are a weak point?

what else differentiates them? Are either proving to be more reliable with all the electronics, is one less rust prone than the other?
Thankyou, I’m really liking it so far. It’s had new turbos and the gearbox refreshed both costing about as much as I paid for it.

Amazing condition for the miles overall.

Like driving a car but being upstairs.

Really quite something, I get why people get addicted to Range Rovers!

Verdict rejected on appeal.
You're not wrong as it's attached to an insufficient engine, however re "Barge" the auto would be the correct transmission if the engine was deemed sufficient and by that I mean the V6 unless the Prelude is more of a sportier steer? scratchchin
I think a prelude might be better with a manual, the Accord or Legend Coupes would be your sort of barge/GT offering.

Those Hondamatic gearboxes were never brilliant, they use parallel axis gears like a manual where each ratio gets a dedicated clutch unlike the epicyclic gearsets of "conventional" autos and they never seem to shift as smoothly.

Four ratios really isn't enough for anything that isn't a complete and total torque monster either, which most assuredly is not a way you'd describe any Honda four pot.
I had an Accord 3.0 V6 auto coupe and it was brilliant...a more stylish, more practical XJS!

I have registered to bid.

The catalogue looks great, but interestingly this:

Is the same Rover 827Si that I was bidding on at SWVA when I bought my DB7, so it's made it all the way to Newcastle and been chucked right into another auction.

I'll hold back - you can fix all the faults, spending a vast amount, and then sell it to me at a mega loss, please!

If you're paying someone to work on it that £5k difference might get eaten up quite quickly.
Are the L405s really that much of an improvement, reliability wise?
I'm not sure about 405's but when I was looking at L322 seriously about 5 years ago everyone I went to look at was rotten to some degree or another and I gave up.

Another 5 winters won't have made the situation any better.
