I would argue that the later generation shooting break...brake...break, was and still is, one of the best looking "estates" ever built.
True, but its form over function imo, the sloping roofline defeats the point of an estate somewhat.Borkage aside, the A6 Avant C6/C7 is one of the better looking estates to me, as well as

This looks like quite a pleasant old barge with added load lugging ability.

Now, this is hugely tempting.

What about a handsome Jaaaaag, replete with supercharger?

IMO, 3 contenders for the seriously overpriced thread right therehttps://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202609045...

Surely there's no prettier car for £7.5k. It'll hurt you, but it has to be worth it.
What happened to the drivers seat.

Having no mot doesn t exactly inspire confidence.
I always wince at breaking thread budget (except Fridays) but if the story on this checks out it looks like a bargain for what I as one of the holy grail of barges

apologies in advance that it's not within thread budget and I can't invoke the Friday exception, but this looks suspiciously cheap for a an almost perfectly thread spec L405:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202609065...

what am I missing? Is it just because it's a very early L405, are they riddled with teething problems so no-one wants them?
mercifully for my lack of self restraint, this seems to have sold. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202609065...

A stonking bargain if it was actually as good as it looked.

The last MOT pass was in 2020. The pictures are rubbish, alloys look in poor shape, scratch on the bumper, and the "immaculate interior" looks suspect. Car is worth £29k apparently, but selling for £8.5k.Please view this ad:

The list of failures and advisories on the April MOT are long and presumably expensive to fix. Thankfully the owner has fixed all but one of these and has very generously not factored this into a very generous sale price. A Ferrari engine? I'd want a bulletproof service history personally.

Estate - check
Petrol - check
Volvo comfy-ness - check
In thread - check
More power than it reasonably needs - check
Is this a good mini barge?
I need to sell the volvo xc90 to free up some cash and get something cheaper, but still practical and comfortable. School me on these engines before I pull the trigger next week. Or I should i hold out for a more sensible, but less bargy, 2l engine?

Immediately before my 2.5T V70 I had a 2.0 V50. The 2.5T is great, and someone here said they had the Mondeo with one in.Is this a good mini barge?

The 2.0 was gutsy enough but quite thrashy due to the gearing (mine had the Ford auto which isn t a UK thing [for 2.0] but it was in JDM.) The extra boot space in the 70 was a big draw too.
I m assuming tax isn’t much of a concern for you as a UK car with the 2.5T will be in the spendy bracket.
The only significant expense I’ve had is replacement of the oil collector / rebreather system which was about £450 all in. Fuel wise I m in the 27-32 range going by OBC, don t bother w full to full stats and all that as it makes no difference.
Unless you re set on a V50 I d consider a V70. V60 I think is still far off this budget.

With motorway work it can deliver fair economy but any degree of town/city driving absolutely decimates it - I think I once struggled to get 190 miles out of a full tank…
The auto box is ‘ok’ but manual is the better fit. That reduces the barginess though.
Hardly see any six pot W124 in thread budget any more. Where have they all gone? https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202609125...
