It's not the right car for me, but this seems to be going cheap:

I keep seeing these and they seem to be the sensible way to get behind that 55k engine. The W220 S55k is rare and usually knackered because it's a W220, the E classses have all been to Birmingham and ruined, and the R230s are usually riddled with faults and whttps://www.pistonheads.com/buy/auction/18048081

It's the least crap car with one of the best engines of all time still, available unruined in meaningful numbers, and as likely to be bork free as any mid 00s Mercedes (so not very). Someone should buy it.

This E430 wears the miles well, nice colours too. Might end up quite expensive for a W210. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/267189963352

Quite a machine.
‘Some of the pixels on the instrument cluster are not showing, that is an easy fix DIY or send to a company which can post back’
Hmmm.

My memory has failed me but did the W219 have SBC or as it is C class-based it escaped that nonsense?
The 219 CLS was E Class based. It had SBC up until 2006 when the 211 E Class was facelifted and the platform switched back to a conventional system.

Shame the PH Auction fee +VAT is so punchy. Adds a grand+ to the price which has to be factored in carefully.
I agree. There were comments for a SAAB 9-3 Estate V6 Turbo that the >£700 PH fee would means it wasn't a viable purchase.I've always liked the looks of the W219 and I am saddened to learn the 20 year olds can succumb to corrosion.

That aside, they really do look like the sanest way to get one of either mental AMG lumps and there appears to be +/- to each.
