The BCA Farage Mobile has turned up
It's excellent. Very, very clean inside and out and completely faultless to drive. Ride quality is very good even on these 18s and I had forgotten how splendid a relatively large engine and a manual gearbox can be, it trickles along in 3rd at 15 but will accelerate smoothly, although rather amusingly it's spinning at 3,000RPM at 80MPH. Change is about a foot across the gate, and has quite a mechanical feel but that's part of the charm.
I'm a bit of a loss now with nothing to actually DO to it except drive it. The tin hat on top will be if the AC holds gas when recharged, I get lucky with that as often as not with these turds.
Maybe it's the benefit of time and how bad things have become with cars but it's very pleasant and even the much maligned interior doesn't seem so bad in black. Seats are superb, everything has worn really well, and it feels very decent on the road. I'm very pleased, I shall have to reconsider my plan to sell it after the Festival of the Unexceptional, it's a shame the history has been lost/binned because it's clearly been very well loved.
The last owner had it on the "comfort" tyre pressures and the trip computer was displaying over 30mpg.
ETA and I just found the service book. Pretty much full history, but it's due an oil change now. Score.

It only made it into the lower end of thread budget because of the auction fees and it was still over my preferred bid limit, I just had a very good feeling about it.
WokeBlob keeps an eye on the market for such things and thinks with the full history and condition and how rare a manual is it'd be £3.5k privately.
Just shoved my hands in under the sill covers and even that's fine. Shed jackpot hit here.

I had a 2004 diesel and while I disliked the engine I liked the rest of the car very much indeed but I'd never tried an early one and as you say it's really not the three legged donkey it was portrayed to be. It very much feels like an old school sporting saloon, I've given it a bit of a chuck about and the ride/handling setup is really very good. They firmed it up quite a bit for the XF and I'm not sure that was an improvement, although the V8 one we had on 17" wheels was an absolute pleasure.W00DY said:

Since then (2003) I have had a wife and at least one dog, hence the choices of Saab 9-5 estate and Range Rover L322 as dog transport.
To be fair to the dog, my border collie used to come with me on tours of the Peak District in my TVR Chimaera.
