I had one of those - green with rusty wings. Paid £600 for it (admittedly this was in 2008). Defintely not a £5k experience.

One of the biggest 'problems' is the speed the engine is turning at motorway speeds - really needs the 5th gear from the E320.

IMO, 3 contenders for the seriously overpriced thread right there
Disagree on the CLS at least. 8 grand more than a ropey one, basically the best possible spec and provenance, will be a future classic. I want it.
I'll bow to your (presumably) better knowledge RE them. And agree, they do shout classic in the making, so very distinctive.

Anglia Car Auctions are having their inaugural modern classic sale on Saturday week, some quirky stuff. The VW camper has a 2.1 engine which I assume is the 5 cylinder job - never knew that.

The auto box is ok but manual is the better fit. That reduces the barginess though.
Agreed, the 6 speed auto is certainly last generations feel. It’s better suited to wafting about at lower speeds, I was surprised initially at how lowly it revs when not making progress.
For quite a heavy car I think the manual would be too much effort unless you do mostly A and Mway driving. I like mine but it’s no latest and greatest - this is barge territory tho’.

Quite a random mix of cars. Some of the estimates seem a little low. £1000 for that 17k mile Clio and £500 for the Corolla. Surely any practical Toyota with an MOT is worth more than that.

Just a flat-4 with a water jacket sadly.

I do like a Passat CC 3.6, shame that one's looking a bit chavved.

15% (+vat). spread, to start with. fk, we should set up a thread auction (not on thread, obvs, we'd be banned). That's.... Well, not something I'd be playing with. Greedy bds don't even have white backgrounds...

Introductory Fees
No entry fee
Selling: 7% (+vat). Minimum selling fee is £85 (+vat)
Buying: 8% (+vat). Minimum buying fee is £125 (+vat)

Some bks prices too, 95k on a standard looking Jimmy for 3-5k, it's a 2.5 car on gumtree, 1800 on FB marketplace. This lot can do one.

Good to see that Macron's restrained commentary is not limited to the barge thread.

ETA damn this is the barge thread! I thought I was elsewhere...

You’re spot on. The more you look at most of the auctions, physical or online, you see what a nonsense the fees are. Some of the current crop are absolutely taking the proverbial.

With regard to some of the ‘estimates’ I think it’s well established that they deliberately low-ball these as a form of clickbait and enticement. There are a few that are comically high too though.

I didn't know that either, flat 4 water cooled!

I like ACA and have sold a car there before, decent outfit. I agree some of the estimates look low but so what - you only bid what you think something is worth.

I'd love to get involved in the auction game. Seems like all the fun of car trading with mire profit and less hassle. I'm in as long as I can be an auctioneer.

I know conventional wisdom is that the L322 only got better as time went on, but these early ones are just so much more charming.

The internet bidding fee at Copart is the one that gets me.

Smoker Auctions could be a lucrative venture - I’d be in for it too!

Ref the earlier L322s, I think they are quite charming and at around £2-3k I think you’d get the most enjoyment out of one that still had some useful life in it. Plenty that are absolute scrap though due to corrosion that hasn’t been addressed, sadly.

Between ebay, car & classic, smaller auction sites and live auctions it certainly seems a pretty popular way to sell older cars at the moment. You'd think there is enough competition to not let fees get out of hand in that space but 18% on sale value for ACA or even more online certainly seems high. At least for the auction houses there's a more clear cost of business but these online auction fees seem wild to me.

Feel like we had this one before, looks super comfy https://www.carandclassic.com/l/C2191125

Hanker hanker hanker....

I had three of these, but just the standard version, not the Monaco, back between 1984 and 1993.
All company cars and all a delight to drive.

When I ordered the last one in 1987 (new list price about £9,000) I specified aircon as an optional extra.
The Renault dealer salesman, with a straight face, asked me why I wanted aircon, as it was November.
I don't think he was called Homer Simpson, but it was definitely a "DOH" moment.

The car died at 180,000 miles when I drove it through a flood on a country road.
I had not realised that the air intake hose had holes in it created by stones on surface dressed roads.
The hose went right down to the bottom of the engine bay.....

Top speed was 125 mph from the 2 litre engine, and the suspension gave superb road holding.
I would snap that up in an instant if I didn't already have too many cars

Not Friday but it finishes before then, 6 seats, 6.3 litres and you can imagine what it's like to be inside a hearing aid.

My friends dad had one of these back in the day. He kept a copy of Flesh Gordon on VHS hidden in the boot laugh
