I do remember thinking the Model S interior looked brilliant when it was first released (like something from the future), but that was 14 years ago when I was young and naive. Now I'm old and grumpy and big screens in cars are stupid.
And yet, car after car is being designed from pretty much every manufacturer with a touchscreen or two. How come car companies didn't consult him over the last decade and stick with analogue dials and buttons?

Yes, but he says that in the context of having just designed this.

That is kind of a large touchscreen, isn't it?

I prefer my current car:

to my last BMW

or the Mercedes before it

There's nothing I preferred about those dashboards. I didn't like their tiny little screens or non-touch interfaces, and I don't miss having any of the physical controls.

I didn't say that the general public don't like large touchscreens, or that a bloke on PH doesn't prefer his Tesla interior to his previous cars (both pretty ugly interiors, I'm with you on that).

Most people clearly do love big touch screens in cars. Most people loved Jimmy Saville - you can't trust people.

Thank christ we don't have rad tax...we've got 15 of the buggers :-)
Pretty sure Rachel is working on that. Just wait till you're forced to have a heat pump.

Given that so many of those large touchscreens are centrally mounted, and given that more people are right-handed than left-handed, I wonder if those screens are actually easier to use in LHD cars ? I know I find mine (lowly MG5) awkward - but then it does have an awfully designed interface.

Hadn't thought of that.

The issue I find with them is having somewhere to rest the bottom of my hand to make it easier to hit the target with finger tip. I'm sure some cars will be much easier in that regard, and it's probably less of a problem in countries with smoother roads.

How have people managed to change gear, alter heater and radio settings all these years prior to touchscreens?

That's the reason, in my opinion, the screens need to be large and mounted high up for both ease of use and safety. A small touch screen buried somewhere in the dash for neatness is an ergonomic disaster.

And with a comfy little bit below to steady my hand on while prodding away, please.

Oddly, legislation has changed to move stuff from screen to switches, as they possibly understand ergonomics?

There a level of precision required with a touchscreen that isn't with physical knobs/buttons I'd suggest.

Most cars have voice control don't they? So just use that if you are struggling to navigate the touchscreen? Voice control works fine with my Tesla.

What legislation is that? If you mean Euro-NCAP, I fail to see how this will change anything as every car has these as switches anyway;

Euro NCAP said:
Under the new rating scheme, which is due to come into force from January 2026, manufacturers won’t be able to achieve the highest safety ratings if they don’t provide proper, physical switches for certain functions including indicators, hazard lights, sounding the horn, operating windscreen wipers and activating the eCall SOS function.

Not sure if serious, but if you are then fine motor control is not needed for those operations. Furthermore, muscle memory will often take your hand to exactly the right place without even needing to look at the actual control. Basic ergonomics.

Not so much the precision as the tactility. Physical knobs and buttons are designed so you can tell what it's doing when you do it, without looking at it (in proper cars).

Getting hold of a knob is easier than placing a fingertip to something, especially when it doesn't respond first time.
