It would be easy for me to jump into this and start freaking out about the 2400 GBP upgrade cost to get functionality to the Tesla infotainment, but that isnt addressing the bigger elephant in the room - this isnt just Tesla, its an industry issue. While I agreed with the move, in general, to making stereo systems integrated for convenience and security (harder to steal, but not impossible), the fantastical prices that are charged are ridiculous these days.

I get that its not just an off-the-shelf iPad or similar and it has to endure heat cycles that consumer electronics dont, but seriously? Just to get a couple of new features? Seems excessive to me. If you are happy to pay that, I am not going to complain, but seems like a common price range these days and doesnt make a lot of sense. Surely there is a way to bring functionality to older cars to make them usable? I know these are manufacturers who want you to upgrade to the latest model, but there has to be some middle ground, right?

Porsche recently announced a set of upgrades for their older models to bring the modern tech to them - simple retro-fit and style to suit the dash makes a lot of sense (and at a Porsche suitable price). Can other manufacturers not do this? Given the tech-heavy nature of EV's going forward, surely is this a suitable revenue stream? Or am I totally off the page here?

Oh, and as a comparison, my wife's i3 came with the smaller screen - works OK, but small. A quick search of the forums gives you alternatives from the OEM, but not branded BMW upgrade for $400 delivered. Brings the upgraded functionality and a couple of new things, which is nice. Go to BMW for the same part (from the same manufacturer) with the logo and it can be anything from $1800 to $2000! Totally NOT worth the price.
It's a kind of early onset dementia for cars!
To some extent the tech should be designed to be easily updated for little or no cost, just like MS Windows or Android.
It seems silly money........ IMO.

I agree with you.

Except for the fact that a 2012 Macbook can't run macOS 11.

They've got to be able to make it more sustainable.

People were talking on another thread about what renders an older car worthless. This, although it by no means makes the car worth buttons in isolation, is just a new way of going about the same old thing. It's a contributing factor to the reduction in the car's worth.
Hopefully aftermarket hackers would be able to step in and develop less expensive mods/updates/fixes.

Like I said, I agree.

The price is just OTT. But it's a stretch expecting 8 year old hardware to run the latest system. It would be more of an issue if it was truly crippling the car though, which it isn't just yet.

Anyways. Back onto the original topic. Shall I push the button on this upgrade or not. Is £2,400 worth it?
The Infotainment experience is better thats a given, but than again it isn't necessary at all given the MUC1 is now covered by a 8 year warranty and I didn't really have an issue with Spotify on the MCU1.

If I didn't have FSD option on my car - which needs MCU2 for driver visualizations + any v11 software changes I would probably have just stuck with getting Tesla to replace the faulty memory chip in the MCU1.

I think the question more is what else would you do with £2,4000, and how long you intend to keep the car. We wouldn't be swapping out of our till 2025/26, so if you look at that way its £400/year which really isn't that much.

If you really aren't sure wait for v11 software to come out and see if there is anything you like. I have to say I'm pleased my car now does sentry mode properly, and I get things like rear wing camera views when reversing.

I remember paying 800 for a double din unit in a car once as well. Didn't regret that purchase either as it made the day to day in that car a lot nicer.

But not Classic FM which is what my wife listens to all the time.
Given all the interest In Classic FM, is this what it looks like? Some old guy (I persume old may not be smile) talking slowly to classical music in the background?

That is the logo. Oddly, it doesn't appear on my car. I'd love someone to solve why my car won't find it. As I said it used to. I stored it in "favorites". It then gave "Loading Error" when selected and the station could no longer be found. Very strange.

It isn't some bloke talking to classical music though. The "DJ's" don't talk over the music at all. My wife is an accomplished musician with an interest in classical music and finds it soothing.

Could it be a region thing? Although I've had no issues with it, I love tunein for that.

Possibly. But gangzoom, audi321 and I are all in the UK. It's like mine thinks it's somewhere else (or maybe theirs do).

I can get TuneIn on my laptop through the same WiFi that the Tesla was searching through. Odder and odder.

Are you sure it's not a family member that figured out how to block Classic FM? hehe

There's a bit of a thread on Tunein here

might be worth reading through.

Like I said. It doesn’t appear under ‘stations’ but only under ‘top result’ which you don’t even have.

I’ve just had a software update recently (now on 2020.48.12.1). What are you on??

Very odd you cannot find the station on Tunein, have you tried to 'reboot' the MCU?

I jest on classical music ofcourse, the 'noise' played in my car 95% of the time is enough to send most sane people insane (unless you are 4 years old smile).

Surprisingly the little madam enjoyed Classic FM on the school run today, so who knows I might end up listening to 'radio' after all!! Yes it works fine on my MCU2 retrofitted car via Tunein streaming.

I do get "Top Result" but it isn't Classic FM:

The software is the latest (updated a few days ago).

Not if they value their lives...
