I know what you mean but there is something special about a “small” car with a thundering big engine though.

We've a twin turbo v6 hybrid and a twin turbo v8 car in either side of the garage, the v6 is nicer to drive, sounds better and quicker.

If they go with the mercedes v8 it'll be turbocharged 4.0L as in a AM vantage - which will push the car in to a 150k+ price range.

Id be surprised in view of 2030 that they wont be introducing some form of elec assist / mild hybrid.

feels an extremely incongruous idea for a Lotus

What do you mean incongruous?
Lotus have used a V8 before.

Might be time to dust that off and give it another go.....

Transverse or longitudinal?
I’d have thought either configuration would create some issues

I m happy to leave this decision to Lotus to figure out but I suspect a manual would sell well by Lotus standards.
The V6 is £110k. A V8 would be more expensive and so sell fewer. For me the Emira looks like a V6 car, not a V8 car.
I don’t think the Emira looks any less like a V8 than the McLaren 570.

Yes, that's the 'base' model. To get a model to the spec of my First Edition is now over £110,000!

I've just specced the most expensive setup Emira and it comes in at £98.5k

Don't know what else they put on your 1st edition to make it cost £110k

I don't think the AMG V8 is designed for transverse installation, and I can't think of a transverse gearbox that could handle the torque. It would be a major redesign to engineer a longitudinal V8 and suitable gearbox into an Emira, and the car would probably have to get longer.

Perhaps a modern version of the Elan 2 plus 2 then!

There wouldn't be much point Lotus reinventing the Corvette C8 that you can already buy for the same price as a V6 Emira. The V8 Corvette's only 1" wider and 8" longer, RHD on sale in UK.

Spoke to a Lotus salesguy at the weekend and discussed this. His opinion was that there's so little space he wasn't sure how you'd even fit one in without significant and costly reengineering.

Hence, my comment about the Thema, which no one seemed to pick up on.

An example of a transverse (albeit front wheel drive) V8 being squeezed into somewhere it doesn't belong...

We're all too young to have the faintest idea what you were talking about (hehe)
