Hence, my comment about the Thema, which no one seemed to pick up on.

An example of a transverse (albeit front wheel drive) V8 being squeezed into somewhere it doesn't belong...
That was slightly different in that it was already a compact transverse installation with its own gearbox from the 308, which had the gearbox in the sump like a Mini or a Miura. There is no such installation they can borrow for the AMG V8, so they'd have to do it from scratch, sourcing and engineering a gearbox from somewhere else.

Can they not just make the engine compliant? I mean, what is causing it not to be compliant?

What do you mean by compliant?

Emissions compliant, which is the reason they can't keep using it and are looking at a V8 to replace it.

If it was that easy I guess Toyota would have done it

Yeah, I'm just wondering what is causing it not to be compliant.

Are Toyota even interested in making ICE engines that are Euro compliant? The only ‘performance’ cars they sell in Europe are made by BMW or Subaru.

Is the Lexus UR GSE V8 still in production? or at least, pass European emissions law? I thought all the Lexus V8's were now out of production for Europe.

That's a pretty light unit, but being a 5 litre, might be a bit punchy, even if it can be mounted longitudinally.

The 2GR V6 is an old engine, almost 25 years in production, and Lotus are the last users of it, apart from a couple of Toyota trucks in some less-regulated markets. It's not worth their while to engineer it to meet the latest Euro emissions. It's been largely superseded in Toyota's own lineup by the V35A V6, which is available with twin turbos, direct injection and hybrid.

Unfortunately for Lotus, that newer V6 is designed for longitudinal mounting, and there's no suitable gearbox to fit it into the back of the Emira. Even with the old engine they have to use an old diesel taxi gearbox as it's the only thing available with the torque rating for a transverse V6.

The only real, viable option for a new vee petrol engine is to go longitudinal, which would be a major engineering change for Lotus and it isn't going to happen for the Emira. It would have to be a new, bigger car.

So the Emira will become a four cylinder car?

It already is. Automatic too.

Looking at the configurator they seem to want to discourage the V6 as an option
