I've badly run out of days to take as leave this year, so across 10pm ferry Tuesday for a curtailed recce. Too many rallies... road cars are neglected, took the front suspension off my escort for a refresh in February and I've still to reassemble it.

Let's hope that's not one of the cancelled ones then - lots of rally folk affected by the Calmac timetables reshuffle next week

Adding to this apparently the roadworks on the M74 are causing long tailbacks.

Mind you according to some weather forecaster's we could even get snow.

It all adds up to Mulls rich tapestry.

Mull residents and businesses have had to put up with frequent ferry cancellations for many years, the trick I find is just to treat it was extra relaxation time.

Anyway, I was very fortunate to recently host a Zoom session with some special guests and chat about "the rally" for a couple of hours. Mainly from a Muileach point of view. It's now been released as a podcast, which you are all welcome to listen to:

Bit of a coup for the organizers of the Killarney Historic Rally , Kalle Rovanpera will drive the 360bhp RWD Toyota Starlet of Jason Black , should be a spectacle

Just read that elsewhere. That's a fair coup for them.

We drove up to Stirling on Tuesday night and got through the 30mph zone very easily #smugface

With the just awful rain on Friday we had some challenges - the event's challenges are well documented elsewhere so I won't comment.

Saturday - no snow, but the hail did lie on the Gribun/Scridain area and it looked like snow.

So, in summary typical Mull - 4 seasons win one weekend. Ignoring the cancellations, what a great event. Back to a decent route and with a full entry loads of atmosphere. The marshals/rescue/recovery/radio folks were just amazing with their commitment (even under the awful weather) and tolerance (for the hours required) so huge praise to all those who stood out on the stages to make sure we could run. There are so many people on an event like that who are never seen, results, radio, etc but without whom we couldn't do it.

Even (most of!!) the spectators were well behaved - we saw some immense parties on our way round - camp fires next to motorhomes and the famous BBQ at Achnadrish House. Great to see and hope you enjoyed it!!

We've already started some of the planning for next year, but first a de-brief needs to happen. Happy to hear any comments from on here??

If I was going to get into rally navigation Mull Rally is not the place I would start.
Taken from Gareth Hooper's Facebook page:

Mull Rally 2024!
A bit of a differant rally for me this year, was undecided whether to do it or not this year or just spanner for Lewis Hooper Rallying but really glad I did!
Sat talking to my mate Jim in the pub one night about rallying and he said he really fancies a go in a manta, so I suggested he codrove for me on mull! (He’s never even been to a rally never mind codriven!) so stupidly we decided to do it!
We came up on Monday and I started teaching him how it all works. It started off badly but after a day recceing he seamed to start to get the hang of it. I was sure when we set off on Friday night that the speed difference from recce car to rally car would be too much and that he would just be sat there for the ride,
How wrong it was!! First few miles of stage 1 I think he was a bit shocked but then he started reading the notes to me and they was actually making perfect sense! End of the stage we managed to sort the timing out between us and went on to stage 2!
That was it, from then on he just got better and better! Stage 5 and 6 we even managed to beat Lewis! Some of the worst weather iv driven in on Saturday but the notes was so good we managed to keep going at a good pace!
Early hours Sunday morning we cross the finish line of the last stage without a single problem only to find out we’d finished 39 th overall from 153 starts, (my best mull result so far!)
So bloody well done jim! I take my hat off to you, you bloody amazed me at you how you’ve took to it!
Lewis also had a fantastic result of 3rd in class and 30th overall!

Yep, we got Jim from complete novice to competent navigator in the space of 5 days. And he enjoyed it! By heck Mull takes it out of you. Adrenaline has finally worn off and I'm knackered now. Just Snowman, Cambrian and Crail to go this year then time to plan to do something very different in 2025.

FIA have sanctioned historic cars 1991-2000 as eligible from next year , not sure how I feel about that tbh. Deeper pockets needed I suppose , then less of the entertaining RWD cars . Slippery slope or are there people willing to compete in the woods using a 97 Subaru WRC or similar ?

we need less Escorts, we need more modern stuff. Not sure a 25 year old group A legacy is that much more expensive to run than a full historic Escort.

Agree with that. But lots of push back from those with existing 2wd historic cars!

The answer for me, is to forget awards/ publicity/ kudos etc for overall wins and to give equal importance to class wins with separate classes for each category and the Cat 5 4wd crowd.

I'm sure the Escort gang won't be too happy allowing 'modern' 4WD cars in their championship. I mean, some are only 25 years old next year.......

Would love to see an FiA EHRC round in the UK......

Had last weekend off, although I did spend Sunday, sat in front of the laptop and the telly and spent all day flipping between WRC, WSBK, FF festival, Rallycross from Knockhill and Caterham's from Donington. Looking forward to the Cambrian and see who wins the BRC.
