The Mk3 427 Cobra being discussed here was not fitted with leaf springs.
All round unequal length wishbones with coil over dampers. Same type of set up as the GD Euro wink

Long before the "it's not a replica, it's a genuine GD" the RAM was widely regarded as the best handling cobra rep. It certainly bested the GD on several occasions in the CSCC wink

If budget is an issue, then the Pilgrem Sumo is considered the cheapest Cobra rep, but its an ali monocoque chassis. Last time I looked, they were based on Siera running gear, which isn't ideal as we are now in 2014!

The Sumo is a steel ladder frame chassis, in fact.

Their website claims that they are redeveloping the car to take BMW 3-series components, but does anyone know the status of Pilgrim since Den Tanner's conviction?

Galvanised steel.

Hmmmm I had a RAM, my first of 6 cobra clones; nice car, no longer made. A GD is different to most other cobra clones, more a Cobra interpretation than facsimile.
If you want ultimate replication, a Kirkham is top, closely followed by one of Dave Brookes aluminium cars; and Dave's are half the price of a Kirkham! My last Cobra (an early Kirkham) was 'helpful' in bringing Dave's masterpieces to fruition, and let's face it, Kirkham openly admit they copied an original!!

In terms of glass fibre cars, the most effective copies in the UK are, for a 289 clone, a Hawk (I've had the Lemans version) or for a 427, a Crendon; to build a very good one of either will see you spend approaching £40K.
As far as I am aware, Crendon aren't taking any more orders at the moment, so you'd have to buy one done or part done (I have had 3 of them)

I think Dave won't mind me saying his cars are £65k on the road currently; that's the bargain of a lifetime when you consider a Kirkham without engine and box and registration is £100k+

There are three broad camps in cobra repro land, 'Bling' mobile, where chrome and shine rule, 'Period correct' and the pursuit of authenticity (which can become obsessive, ending up where only an aluminium car with a side oiler will do), and 'racer on the road', where space frames rule, and the choice is RAM (extinct), Magnum (ditto) or GD.

Check the depth of your pockets, talk to a pro builder like Dave Brookes, who can also build you a DAX..

Always had a soft spot for the Magnum - there used to be a black one turn up at the Kent meets probably 9 odd years ago now. Evil looking buggers in the flesh - almost a hot rod channeled appearence smile

Love the stance and look of this one: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C540487

The Superformance Cobra has a higher rear wing profile, that personally I don't like. Of the fiberglass replicas I think the ERA has by far the best shape. With the aluminium bodied variants you have, the original 427, the AC MkIV, the Kirkham, Dave Brooks, Hawk...all look and I've heard are great.

No first-hand experience, but Cobretti were at the lower end of the market.
