Kitcar for about five grand?

I think you could build one for £5-6k if you base it on the GBS Zero, but I would go with the MX5 kit as at least you have a chance of finding a base car. Sieras are getting very hard to find now.
Engine, fuel system and ECU can be some of the bigger expenses and you can pick up a 1.8 or 2.0ltr Zetec for around £600, Yamaha R1 Injectors for 80 and then you will need a ECU to run it all.
I totted it all up a few years ago and even went for a test ride in a Pinto GBS Zero. Very impressive car, but even back then theywere saying donh't bother going for a Pinto as they are pretty old.
Ended up buying a MINI Cooper S instead. Was a bad idea.

Anyway, my original build cost with all test fees included for that car came in at £6500. The turbo conversion cost another £1200 for the parts and fitted by myself. I sold it for £5500 which i think was a bargain for such a car.

Need to get my head back into searching, although a big hill on my daily driver has somewhat dulled my appetite for motoring silliness!
I bought my Westfield for just under £4k, all be it nine years ago.
That was a largely original 1991 plate with a 1900cc CVH, needed a pair of rear dampers for the MOT and since then as also been fully rebushed (cheap and easy for anyone with a press) and front dampers to match, diff rebuild after Gerards. New seats and a rollbar. But has otherwise been cracking, used for road use and autosolos as well as odd track days, driven to mid France and The Ring.
Get on WSCC, but 5-6k should get you something reasonable and likely zetec powered I would have thought.

Can't agree about the Tiger (Cat), I've owned one and it was a cracking car, depends a lot on who built it obviously. Also owned a Luego Velocity, not as pretty as the Tiger but probably a better design, particularly the rear suspension. I'd have either again. Check WSCC for sale, ebay, autotrader, pistonheads. Youll get a kit car for that. I'd personally be looking for a zetec engined car just because replacement bits should be abundant.
Engine wise I would have thought the OP would be better looking at a Zetec rather than a Crossflow, they're cheap to buy, plentiful and reasonable power as standard. Yes you can get good power out of a Crossflow and it will be fun to do but it will cost. I had both in my Luego and I'd take the Zetec every time (Duratec even better but more pennies).

My Zetec engined Tiger was in better condition than some of the home built Caterfields you see at shows.

nice car, a bit oldschool from the techical point of view...hence it should cost around 3.5 to 4k...but still not a bad buy for 5k
and ýou should always by an oldschool (escort mk2 based) sylva striker for 4-5k in perfect, next to new condition.
maybe not everybodies taste wform the design, but those cars handle really well.

Although you'll have to beg, borrow or steal to increase your budget by £4k as you'll need at least £9k for a tidy one.
I hear people talk about how raw the '7' experience is - and I'm sure it is - but it's nothing compared to a Rocket !
Picking flies out of your teeth after a run, or getting muddy puddle water full in the face from the offside wheel as you go around a right-hander may not be to everyone's taste. It's cold, drafty, noisy and you can't pick your nose in traffic as there's always some one looking but I love it !
I've had a mix of cars in the past that have attracted some attention but nothing like this one.

I have seen some great crossflow powered Westfields on EBay. Think, retro styling, swept wings, no carbon, no throttle bodies, no fancy pants seats or weight saving extras. I’ve always liked the look and thought of owning a car like this. Around 125 bhp is fine and will be easy to work on and upgrade if necessary. Just look how popular the Caterham 160 is....just get some skinny steelies and spray it pastel green and your away!

I have a 1991 SE and have loved it, I am 6ft2 80kg and while its not wide I have no issues fitting into grp seats. Wider hips might be better with the original bench seats, but just sit in it before you buy.
After 8 years of pure joy mine is currently mid engine swap due to a dropped valve, 1.9cvh to 2l blacktop and sorely miss it.
