more or less a remake of the Phoenix...but mid-engined, based on the Riot.

It's worth investigating the Sylva Spectre. I've seen some pictures a mate took of the first demonstrator being built and it is very interesting.

That Fury looks gorgeous!

(Sorry not really a constructive input, but you've gotta admit it looks 'right' on the 'Ring)

Autotune Gemini.

If I'd gone for building a car from scratch in the mid 90's I'd have picked one as I really liked the example below. Rover V8 and double wishbone rear suspension yum

Doh, my Sylva spotting powers failed me. smile

Do you think it's fair to say the Jeremy Phillips (Sylva/Fisher/SSC) designs are generally thought to be the best handling cars of their type? I haven't driven many up to date kits, but you always get the impression that his designs are thought to be significantly better than the other cars dynamically?

I'll resist pointing out it says Phoenix on the front and sides....

The Phoenix/Stylus/Fury/Striker are all basically the same chassis (obviously differences with IRS or live axle and different front uprights). They have a reputation for being pretty good handling wise and have won many championships. As to if they are the best I don't have sufficent experience of other Kit Cars to tell you....

I think its fairer to say there is not a lot better. Like all kits, a Sylva with badly chosen cheap shocks, the wrong spring rates and badly set geometry will not handle at all well. But the ingredients to cook a great car are in there. The basics to build a race winning car are there (although the best race chassis are vastly altered from what you would want on the road, lowered chassis and altered suspension points to run the C of G as low as possible) and a well set up Sylva is a joy to drive. LOL! Just put the kid's bikes away in the garage. Spent 10 minutes just looking at my car. It is a thing of beauty though ;-)

Maybe a bit retro to some but the Sylva Pheonix and Fury are way better looking than any seven. I'm totally biased of course.

jeffw I'm very jealous of you taking the Phoenix to the ring that's something I'd love to do hopefully someday.

I wondered what you guys thought of these cars for sale,

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1076157.htm - never really seen a fury with a hardtop and I actually quite like the look of it.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1004515.htm - seems quite cheap and a good project car to put some money, time and effort into to make my own.

However this would really be my ideal but a little out of my budget

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/965310.htm .

Also the engine that I originally wanted to have was either a 1.8 or a 2 litre zetec as I can't really do a BEC as I'm only 23 and insurance is quite high with them and its seems the engine that would best suit my requirements. I wondered how important you thought it was to wait for a car with the engine you originally wanted especially with the fury and phoenix being quite rare. What did you guys particularly look for when choosing which car was right for you?

Thanks

The Green Fury is a nice enough car but I would think it is a little expensive. The ex-racer Phoenix is cheap but you would need to be good with your hands as there is a fair bit of work there. The black BEC Phoenix was bought off Ebay by the dealer for £6000....he has had it for a far while now, might be able to get it for £6.5k or so, he also has a red one which he paid around £6.5k for.

having built a fury and built a RIOT and now own a Pheonix, I would definately look at the spectre (I think thats how u spell it) as the riot is a great drive and the spectre is a full body version with updates. If that is not an option go for a Pheonix. As others have said I think you will be happy with either of the three options. JUST MAKE SURE YOU DRIVE MORE THAN 1 BEFORE YOU BUY AS SET UP AND GENERAL PACKAGE VARY A HUGE AMOUNT. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

I did have a look at the Sylva Spectre as it was mentioned earlier however I felt that it would probably end up to expensive to get the sort of spec I would like building it from a kit. Although in the future this is definitely something I would like to do maybe when I have a little more space and a little more money. Currently my budget is quite tight £5-£7k but I really want a kit car so I'm just trying to make it work. I understand that it varies greatly but how does initial build costs compare second value of something like a Fury or a Phoenix.

Andy

If you are interested in the Black Phoenix I would certainly give the guy a ring....Tell him the max you have is £7K and see what he says.

Cost to build will always far exceed the 2nd hand value...even if you only count parts and not labour.

Is the Phoenix still available as a kit? A quick Google search doesn't reveal much.

Apparently, however the webpages haven't been updated for some time

http://www.rainbirdracing.com/
http://www.cyanacars.com/

Raw where the last people to actively make them as far as I'm aware.

I was flicking through an old CKC and came across an article that said Rainbird were developing a new chassis to be shared by the Phoenix and the Toniq R which had become part off the same company. Haven't seen much since, but the bloke who owns Caged is involved so I reckon there's bound to be some progress soon.

As for Cyana, I read on Sylva Chat that the owner has other businesses and hasn't really pushed the version of the Phoenix he bought the rights to. It was going to be MX5 based, which always sounded like a good option to me. It would be interesting to know how many of the Mazda SDV kits Westfield have shifted though.

Personally, I'm with the votes for the Spectre. I spoke to Jon Regan at Spectre Sportscars recently and it sounds like the development work is really coming on. I've already started looking for a suitable Puma donor and it looks like there are loads of cheap ones out there so a £7k to £8k build looks like a real possibility,

I see this thread has re-surfaced!

I can now vouch for the 'brick wall' effect that Seven aerodynamics have, and it is as dramatic as suggested. Being able to watch the front wheels moving is quite cool though. biggrin
