Hi Hans

The temperature sensor you bought is for the Ford gauge and not the AC. As Adrian said in the start of the thread you need one for a Vauxhall Viva fitted with an AC guage. You also need an adaptor to fit it as the whole sender is a lot bigger than the hole it fits in. The main problem is these are very difficult to get hold of. I managed to get one a few years ago that was supposedly new old stock but it didn't work when I tested it. I have got mine working by fitting a variable resistor and adjusting it so ti reads the correct temperature when the engine is hot but I'm not sure how accurate it will be below and above normal.

I hope that helps

Hi Nige

Yes I now understand the problem.

What I found in my Vixen parts bin are 2 sensors.
The smaller type is broken because no resistance at all.
The bigger one I have not tested because does not fit as you told before.

I will have to go your route or is there someone who has the ultimate solution?
Or complete technical specification for combination of sender/adaptor/resistor ?

Hope to hear more.

My mistake!

I think I may have posted this before...

But this will match any gauge to any sender (with a bit of experimentation)
https://www.spiyda.com/magento/index.php/fuel-gaug...

Eventually I will configure my AC gauge to run with a Durite (or other) sender, but I'll probably have that professionally done so I can keep the AC gauge.

If you have time to play about with senders, loose wires and gauges - this is a nice bit of kit.

I also tracked down the correct (i hope) sender with the help of several guys on here, for my 302 conversion but have since decided to keep the car original. I have two sending units, brand new. I haven't tried one to see if it is correct or not but I can supply the number this weekend when I get home if anyone is interested.

The sensor on the right is identical to the one I have. I was going to take a picture of my sender in the adapter but it's in my Vixens glove box and I don't have my car as it's been taken away to hopefully get repaired after being hit by a lorry frown

Hi Charlie,

Of course I am interested.
Do you also have the adapter for it? Or a supplier/manufacturer?

Thanx Hans

Hi Hans

The adapter for mine is just a threaded piece of brass the size of the thread in the head with a hole in it that is brazed to another piece of threaded brass tube that the sender fits into. I don't know if mine was made by TVR or if someone else fabricated it.

Eventually we (or me) come to the solution.

But I wonder how many Vixens with this item are running around?
And how many solutions are there?
Or maybe many AC temperature gauges do not work but their owners just loves driving.

This problem of fitting the right sender (at least for me) still not solved.

Is there no one who can make a pic of his adapter / pick-up solution in his engine block?

You could make me (more) happy.

Hans

Hi Hans

I still haven't got my Vixen back from being repaired but I've found these 2 old images of it with the sender screwed in. I'm afraid they're not great.

Best Nige.

Thanks for the pics.
Of course in line what was told but pictures give the whole story.

Now I have to bake and cook or barbecue this thing together.
Nice job.
Will show the result later.

Thanks again, you made me happy.

Hans.

Or does someone has a spare one ??????

This was a timely resurrection I was just about to post the question again - has anyone found the part number, or car model that a sensor comes from, that works it's the AC gauge?
If they have I might have missed it but it would be really helpful to have it confirmed.

I am assuming that once you have Identified the NPT or BSP thread sizes it is a simple matter of tapping to suit. You can get take offs and adaptors inn various thread sizes?? The male thread looks to be 1/8
NPT So something like this adaptor drilled and tapped would do the job?

Hi all.

THe thread in the engine block is tapered.
So I took the old sender, drilled a hole through in lenght.
Then I soldered ( not het finished) it to a bigger nut.
Then I searched a nut that fitted to the correct Vauhall sender.
Now I solder the 2 nuts together.
Must be watertight of course.
Not ready yet but does not look very nice.

Doing it the proper way as Niels writes is difficult for me because I have not bits for the correct threads.
Even indentifying si difficult.

Will show my work when I have testen it.

Of course I am in for a nicer/professional solution
