Sender for AC temperature gauge
Discussion
Hi Hans
The temperature sensor you bought is for the Ford gauge and not the AC. As Adrian said in the start of the thread you need one for a Vauxhall Viva fitted with an AC guage. You also need an adaptor to fit it as the whole sender is a lot bigger than the hole it fits in. The main problem is these are very difficult to get hold of. I managed to get one a few years ago that was supposedly new old stock but it didn't work when I tested it. I have got mine working by fitting a variable resistor and adjusting it so ti reads the correct temperature when the engine is hot but I'm not sure how accurate it will be below and above normal.
I hope that helps

Hi Nige
Yes I now understand the problem.
What I found in my Vixen parts bin are 2 sensors.
The smaller type is broken because no resistance at all.
The bigger one I have not tested because does not fit as you told before.
I will have to go your route or is there someone who has the ultimate solution?
Or complete technical specification for combination of sender/adaptor/resistor ?
Hope to hear more.
Hans

I think I may have posted this before...
But this will match any gauge to any sender (with a bit of experimentation)

Eventually I will configure my AC gauge to run with a Durite (or other) sender, but I'll probably have that professionally done so I can keep the AC gauge.
If you have time to play about with senders, loose wires and gauges - this is a nice bit of kit.

Here is another version of the same thing that might be of intersts.

I also tracked down the correct (i hope) sender with the help of several guys on here, for my 302 conversion but have since decided to keep the car original. I have two sending units, brand new. I haven't tried one to see if it is correct or not but I can supply the number this weekend when I get home if anyone is interested.

Hi Charlie,Charlie
Of course I am interested.
Do you also have the adapter for it? Or a supplier/manufacturer?
Thanx Hans
I am assuming that once you have Identified the NPT or BSP thread sizes it is a simple matter of tapping to suit. You can get take offs and adaptors inn various thread sizes?? The male thread looks to be 1/8
NPT So something like this adaptor drilled and tapped would do the job?

Hi all.
THe thread in the engine block is tapered.
So I took the old sender, drilled a hole through in lenght.
Then I soldered ( not het finished) it to a bigger nut.
Then I searched a nut that fitted to the correct Vauhall sender.
Now I solder the 2 nuts together.
Must be watertight of course.
Not ready yet but does not look very nice.
Doing it the proper way as Niels writes is difficult for me because I have not bits for the correct threads.
Even indentifying si difficult.
Will show my work when I have testen it.
Of course I am in for a nicer/professional solution
