Adrian. Really helpful once again and I’m sure my neighbour will understand it better than I do. It may be a couple of days before he can help and I can get back to you but I’ll certainly give you a call and sort out what I need, thank you so much for your help.

I think I do have a ballast resistor, is this it in the photo below? As it has wires going in and out I’m assuming it is in use in the system at present. I also took one of my coil if that helps.

I also think I do have the cold start wire to the starter as I have the main positive cable plus a much smaller one which attaches to a male connector on the starter itself. Is that right? I’ve basically just replaced the starter like for like.

Adrian, apologies as I’m not sure I understand the question about the starter but basically it is the same as the one I removed but now high torque. I took a photo of the one I removed which is below so does this help?

I’ve attached the positive feed to the main nut/bolt (top of solenoid in picture) and a smaller wire to the male connector (next one clockwise in picture) as it was when removed. The other smaller peg which is the next one clockwise wasn’t used on the old one and I can’t think if the new one has that or not. Just tried to look but I can’t really see easily now the cover is over it and through the manifold. I’d have to get it up on my ramps again. How does that relate to you question on IN/OUT?

Thanks

Are you aware that the solenoid is fitted incorrectly on the old motor?

Solenoid is 180 degrees out

Thanks once again. I think I’ve now built up a good enough picture and resource to help talk with my neighbour who will help guide me with some this I’m sure.

Adrian, I’ll try and look up your number and give you a call about the parts I need if that is ok? Is there a good time to call, daytime, evenings? I’ve had a look at the wiring and the only relay I can see under the dash is the hazard relay so I’m not aware I have one for the starter so will need that.

Do you think this could solve my issues or is it highly likely there will be more beyond and would it explain why the battery seems to lose its charge whilst trying to start the car? I can see another new battery bring s requirement once I get sorted but can’t afford to go through them as weekly throw away items!!!

Thanks once again.

Oh no what has happened. Adrian posted lots of useful replies for me to follow and work through and now I can’t see them. I’ve now lost the advice on what I need to try and do. Does anyone know how to get them back. Is it because I corrected a word in a previous post it has now removed his?

Nightmare!

Andrew.
have you got the Instructions from the Starter Motor supplier. With the Wosp starters I supply There is always guidance how to correctly fit the new unit and correctly wire the unit in and also usually notes on how to correctly isolate / remove the separate solenoids etc when switching to a combined Starter as opposed to one with seperate solenoid pack. Also your Starter Supplier should be able to correctly advise as to how you supply the 12V hot start voltage as per the cars original wiring. smile

I do t have any instructions but it was a like for like replacement other than now being high torque. What I hadn’t realised as I thought it was just the starter was faulty is that the wiring to the starter itself may actually be the cause or at least part of the problem. At least with Adrian’s posts I had a chance of working through it. I’m going to try and find his number to give him a call anyway so I’ll try and see if I can make some notes. It’s just easier to follow when written down as I’m not electronically minded so it’s not always easy for me to capture when talking about it.
