never understood why there is so much paranoia about the USA in France. Smacks of a lack of national self confidence.

If you look back through history, the British record of overseas policy was truely dire at the time we were an 'Empire'. Nowadays the Americans are doing much the same. It is always about greed, in Empire days it was tea, spices, silk etc. now it is oil. BTW have you noticed that in nearly all cases the country/group that starts a war then loses?

Interesting point ... guess one factor is that governments sometimes start wars to take the population's mind off domestic problems, i.e. its an act of desperation not driven by clear strategic thinking. Also its much easier to defend than to attack. A rule of thumb for infantry is you need a 3 to 1 numerical advantage over the defenders.
