Bathhurst 1000
Discussion
Well then, TBH i'm in a similar situation. I've been to Oz before and know the History of the Event but this year will see me at Bathurst for The Great Race, for the 1st Time. I'd say that if you can, then GO !! The problem you'll have is Accommodation. Like the TT,Hotels/B&B/Guest Houses etc get booked Year on Year by the same People. Even more surprising, the same is true for Camping and Motor Home Pitches.
A further thing to take into account is that this Year is the 50th Anniversary of the Event meaning a bigger Crowd than normal.
Sydney to Bathurst is 126 Miles, about 2hrs 45 but Traffic will be heavy and it can take up to twice that time.
If you are set on going (and I would be !!) get onto Google and search for accommodation in Portland/Lithgow/Katoomba.
Another option is;
http://www.tentcityhire.com.au/level_2/bathurst.ht...
It depends on how many are in the Party and what Transport you have.
You won't get a Hire van as too many have been wrecked so Hirers do not let them out. Campers might be available,Google Campervan Hire Australia for options.
You might struggle for a pitch but it might be worth a punt.
Hope you make it.

Another option would be a Post on Facebook; search v8supercars or Bathurst 2012-Who's going???
and see if anyone can help. That's where i got fixed up with my accommodation for both Bathurst and Surfers Paradise for the Gold Coast 600, a couple of weeks later.

2+3/ Yes Campbelltown is only 202 Km away but the road to Bathurst is going to be busy. People over there that i have asked recommend getting there for 05.00-06.00,at least you will be there and you can have a snooze in the car rather than sit in a queue for ages.
Enjoy !! I intend to.
Warning, waxing lyrical post:
I've been, bloody fking jesus christ, what a place!
It was a while ago but if anything it's even better now. 650bhp V8's, truly epic drivers, two wheels in the air, big oversteer, 190mph main straight, the quickest corner in Aus motorsport and side by side action for 6 straight hours.
I drove the track in a Commodore, thought it was going to snap in half through the Dipper, bloody incredible.
What a race, what a spectacle. What a track.
Watching Tony Longhurst sideways on three wheels through McPhillamy at 125mph every single lap was genuinely shocking, almost violent. They do exactly the same thing now. Check 'Top 10 shootout' on Youtube.
Get yourself up the top of the mountain (just after McPhillamy) absolutely the best viewing spot. Race lasts long enough to check a few viewing areas but Skyline looking back at McPhillamy is best.
Take all weather gear, it can change very quickly.
I stayed in Orange about 30 miles away from Bathurst, got a room easily. Try 'wotif' or 'needitnow' for accom.
Can I come?

Still General Admission tickets available just no Grand Stand tickets.
It's the 50th anniversary race this year so it will be packed out.[with drunks and bogans lol]

And when you pronounce Bathurst it's not Bath-urst like Clarkson pronounces it > if you get it wrong no one will know what you are talking about > :-)

Over on the forums @ Motors TV
Look forward to watching this all year.
Finish work early
Dash home via the local Take Away to purchase excessive amounts of food (can always be eaten cold for lunch and tea if needed)
Power on the big TV and sound system
and not move till the race is over.
Have to hope there is a dodgy internet feed.

I'm very sorry, but for contractual reasons we will not be showing Bathurst LIVE this year, we will only be showing a 2 hours highlight show.
