He's got a very wise head on his shoulders. When he said that he doesn't see himself any differently, but knows that others now perceive him differently showed incredible emotional intelligence for someone so young.

Kudos young man, kudos.
That was my view as well. Huge emotional intelligence and capacity for change. Even if he doesn't make F1, etc, he will do great things.

I think he's going to struggle to make it all the way. The competition is so fierce moving up from F3 that without winning the championship or lots of sponsorship, that dream could die away a bit.

I can see him anywhere from Blancpain/Le Mans GT racing, to BTCC. He has a big "family" on the BTCC package, so that has to be the fall back position if his rise to F1 stalls.

He's already part of a Le Mans team for the 2020 season so I can't see him having to fall back to a domestic series for a long, long time.

Also, Jesus Christ- the upper body strength to haul yourself out of a confined, high sided carbon tub race car within the FIA's driver exit time?
And the sheer body strength to haul his massive bks around each day.

That young man is like Zanardi. Inspirational.

Billy is incredible but as I posted some time back after he gave a particular interview, sometimes his expression and tone of voice are giving away a real sadness within him at what he has lost. That is evident in this programme at times as well.

I hope that in the long years to come, as his parents age and the public fuss has died down, that he is able to cope. "After the Lord Mayor's Parade", so to speak.

I hope I don't sound too negative. He's truly awesome, I just feel so bad for him and what has happened to him has got to have hurt him mentally.
He does seem to have shut away something , I do find him to be an amazing young man and believe he will be the first disabled champion .
Maybe his ability to close some things away is that thing that separates the champions from the also rans .
If you spend any time with champions you soon realise that they are different to the rest of us .
Documentary film making is an art form. Some might say it's a 'black art'. Quite common to edit in a reaction to a question entirely separate to that which is shown on screen. There's nothing wrong with this as it can add to the drama of a story being told but can suggest an emotion that might not be wholly aligned to a particular topic.

I finally got to watch the recorded documentary.
What a very wise, strong young man. I was genuinely moved by it all.
Cool that Lewis Hamilton dedicated the Biritsh GP win to him, and then went to see him with his new race car. thumbup

Did this not used to be announced on the night? Are the BBC trying to ruin SPOTY? As far as I can tell they've not had a public vote this year, all seems very odd.

The vote is normally during the programme.

What I meant is knowing the recipient of the Helen Rollason award in advance seems unusual and should we not know the contenders for SPOTY by now?

He's inspirational. I had some dust in my eye when he collected his award. If I had the money, I'd sponsor him!

How on Earth has he managed to walk unaided as well as that? You'd never know anything had happened. Incredible.

thanks, at least I know now what the BBC were thinking - apparently not announcing the contenders until the night adds to the excitement. Or do you think it's so they can avoid the situation where Andy Murray won it three times but never turned up. scratchchin

Oh, and yes, Billy monger deserves the recognition.

Not for Billy the sort of courageous slow "I *will* walk up to the stage" struggle that might be more typical of such a scene. Instead Billy simply strolls up confidently like nothing was wrong.

I wouldn't be able to make that walk so confidently, in front of an audience and live tv cameras, even with both my legs intact.

I was out last night so didn't see this and the posts on here have just caused me to find it to view on line. What a remarkable person he is, the way he spoke so confidently an eloquently at just 19 was exemplary. I was looking forward to hearing the rest of his speech but the YouTube clip I watched cut him off. I then discovered it wasn't a YouTube edit but the BBC actually cut him off! How utterly disgraceful - words fail me about that corporation. mad

They did give him a chance to finish the speech later on.
