You're right, it's not strictly circuit racing but more like a qualifying session from circuit racing (but more expensive).

It's absolutely not comparable to BTCC unless of course you're into comparing liveries.....
A friend of mine used to use an ex BTCC Astra in Time Attack. Though it did have an engine swap so about 550-600bhp. It won a lot.

"Most difficult to understand the appeal? Time Attack(but at least it attracts a lot of youngsters) . "

The appeal I think comes from seeing, hearing some pretty extreme cars, and mostly they are cars that you can build up yourself too or have a road going version.
For the competitors it can act as a stepping stone from road car, modify a bit, track day car, modify a bit more , Compete in Time Attack, move on to proper racing

I guess the lack of variety in the big ticket motorsports is that without the strict rule set you may end up with one car dominating to a massive extent. I know you get dominant cars like the Merc in F1 of the last few years but at least that is only around 0.5-1 sec a lap faster than the competition not 5+ sec.

I cant remember names but there was a guy that used to race at Castle Combe in a turbo Exige. It was so far out in front compared to saloons and sportscars he was competing with that he decided to start races from the pitlane and just plow through the field and win anyway. Fair play to him he could certainly drive it well but I just didn't see the point.

Time Attack is interesting.

I went to watch it years ago at Snetterton, was actually a fun day, they had all sorts going on, and the time attack cars were pretty cool, very easy to access and ask about, and generally a far less snobbish attitude than a lot of high class circuit racing in the UK.

Was not that interesting to watch, but the cars were impressive, well engineered. SO it hit a spot, but would only do it once, and the quality of the grids dropped a lot after the first few years

Indeed- and if you go to one of the many hillclimb venues which has a speed trap you can learn a lot about just how much faster pure race cars are than the cars which, on the road at least , get many of us moist like sundry Ferraris and Porsches. The difference can be eye opening
