A sad day - Gurney was creator and driver of the Belgian GP winning Eagle which , to many , is the best looking racing car ever made and Le Mans victor, star in Can Am , Indy , NASCAR , team owner and all round great guy. The best type of American.

A very sad day in motor sport and the loss of a true gentleman. I was lucky enough to see him win his first race in the F1 Eagle, at the Race of Champions at a bitterly cold Brands Hatch in March 1967.

He gave Bruce McLaren three drives in his spare F1 Eagle in 1967 when Bruce didn't have a competitive car of his own; can you imagine a modern team owner doing that, even if it was allowed? Bruce gave him a drive in the spare M8b CanAm car in 1969; Dan stormed through the field from the back of the grid then dutifully help third place behind Bruce and Denny. He also drove
for McLaren in the first three races of the 1970 CanAm season after Bruce's tragic death until he was forced to give up the drive for contractual reasons.

A great man. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

One of the true legends of the sport of motor racing, not just F1.

Climbed the motorsport ladder from being a typical teenage California 'hot rodder', seen here on the Bonneville salt flats in Aug 1950, in his self built Model A roadster hot rod, in which he gained a SCTA timing tag of just over 130mph.

Formula 1 would be in a real flap without Dan

"legend" is over-used, but most definitely applies in this case

Yes, the Gurney eagle was a beautiful car. And Gurney was the only man Jim Clark feared.
A fitting epitaph.

Very sad news - I'll never forget seeing him with one of his cars at the Goodwood FOS some years ago.

RIP Dan.
