Jenks (Denis Jenkinson or DSJ) for navigating Moss to the famous victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia and his wonderful Grand Prix reports in Motor Sport — especially his report on the German Grand Prize when it moved to the new circuit when he imagined what would have happened had it been held on the proper 'Ring. Brilliant journalism by a real motor sports enthusiast.

David Purley, if only for his utterly heart breaking attempts to save Roger Williamson at Zandvoort. Quite a life after that too, as anyone who has seen the remains of his 1977 British GP car..

Most of my ‘hero’s’ are still alive...but.

Tom Mcewen
Donald Campbell
Bernt Rosemayer
Dale Earnhardt

All utterly outstanding in their field

Henry Seagrave

His career was brief (compared to say Campbell's) but spectacular. Grand Prix winner, and holder of the speed record on both land and water. First man past 200 mph - and then took the amazing Golden Arrow to 230+ on the first day it ever turned a wheel. Out of the crate - up and down the beach - record (increased it by 11.5%). One of the great feats of speed record breaking.

Plenty have driven fast... but to give so many others the ability to drive fast, now that was real magic.

Raise you St Alfred Neubauer.

Almost as fast as his drivers.

Haha.

Yes you are quite correct.

That said both could qualify given their contributions to the cause.

Lots of heroes listed but in terms of saint, which I'll define for my purpose as 'someone who did something for the good of others, without reward', Its got to be Jackie Stewart, his work on driver safety was exceptional,

Niki Lauda (none braver, and none smarter ) ,

Enzo Ferrari(nobody comes close ) ,except

Colin Chapman(the greatest iconoclast ) ,

Phil Hill(the rarest of things , a cultured and smart racing driver who loved the sport ) ,

Roger Clark (once seen - hugely sideways in an Escort- never forgotten ) ,

Damon Hill and Peter Revson (two drivers who could write with such honesty and insight )

, Barrie Williams (the very model of a journeyman Brit driver) ,

Denis Priddle (because he made me fall in love with drag racing ) ,

Senna (the best driver I have ever seen)

Brian Redman ,Vic Elford , Pedro Rodriguez and Jo Siffert (because their bravery matched their skill ) and

Takuma Sato (because I have never seen anybody drive an F3 car with such ferocity ) .

Oh , and Russell Bulgin and Pete Lyons for writing about the sport so superbly .
